Was helping a buddy of mine over the weekend to tear down a tree in his front yard. I was as tall as his house and the trunk was about 8" in diameter. We though, "no contest". YEAH RIGHT!
The handy chainsaw buzzed the thing to the ground in no time. We each took our turn with the ax to hack at the roots before we tried yanking it with another guy's Silverado Z71. Chained the stump to the hitch, hit '4 LOW' and he nailed the gas.....tree didn't budge! He tries pulling it a bit more, again, nothing. We hack at the roots a LOT more, then try the truck again.....NOTHING! Didn't even budge!
Okay, time to call in the big rig. We call another buddy with an F-250 Diesel. Again, '4 LOW'. This guy is selling this truck and doesn't care a bit about it. Has a buncho miles on it too. He guns it and the stump only moved a little.
After a few more attempts, we gave up and enjoyed the icy brews we had planned to drink in celebration of our triumph over nature while the guy with the Chevy ended up getting towed to the dealer b/c his 4X4 wouldn't disengage!!

You have two choices in life:
You can stay single and be miserable,
or get married and wish you were dead.
how do you chain a stump up? Is there something you buy? and what the hell keeps it from flying outta the ground and into the back or front(if pulling from the front) of your truck?
i guess you cut a small grove and place the chain inside the small slit. The higher it is the better with leverage.
Couldn't you water the soil to soften it? Or would it make it heavier and more compacted?

Yes you can cut a grove , but just I make a choke collar and let it self tighten, higher is better but it can also slip off,
and generally I'll just dig a small trench around it and soak it for several hours before pulling it , except if it a has a long tap root {main root goes straight down} then those are a bear to pull.
and I have used many differant makes of trucks to pull larger stumps out, biggest being over 4ft across, but then again I left about 6-8ft of the tree standing for leverage.
I perfer pulling them out, cause with grinding you have to keep filling in the low spot/hole due to the roots rotting.
I wasn't about to hook the 2X4 Titan up to it + I don't have a trailer hitch. I've never seen someone pull a tree stump with a truck, so I wouldn't know the techiques, if they exist. I was too afraid of damaging my newborn.
To pull the stump, we just notched the tree about 2 ft up from the ground, wrapped the chain through the notch we made on the stump, and wrapped the other end of the chain loop around the ball hitch of the truck.
We didn't think of watering around to soften the ground any. That could have worked, but we would have made an even bigger mess of his front yard. The F-150 guy had some dynomite for some beaver damns that we quickly dismissed, as the house was ~15 ft from the tree. My friend couldn't afford a window job on his house.

You don't want to use the gas at all, really. Using a long chain or tow strap, use just enough gas to get the truck rolling and then slip it in to neutral, letting the momentum of the truck do the work.
Putting it in 4WD Low and punching the gas isn't going to do it for you, as your friends found out.

I love the contradiction of threads. Here people are saying and rightly so, don't try this but over at the "ya'll wanna hook up a F-150 and a Titan and get er done" thread, people are begging for someone to sacrifice their truck. Insanity I tell you.

Sounds like a Pay Per View event to me!!!

I tried to pull a stump with a 3/4 ton Dodge power wagon once. That didn't work either. I wouldn't try it with my new Titan. And wouldn't recommend anyone else try it.
Anyone of a number of things can happen when pulling stumps, and most of them are not good.
