I believe it was named Titan because the first full size truck from a Japanese car maker, the Tundra was not quite full size. So Nissan wanted to make sure that they weren't perceived as doing the same thing.

A woman designed the Titan? Cool! Man, I got to meet her. (Butthead voice) Ahhhh huh..huh.huh...ahhhh huh..huh.huh.huh.....you wouldn't happen to know her phone # would 'ya? Is she like single? Ahhhhh huh..huh..huh..huh..huh.huh.

Alternate names for the Titan....

Nissan Torus? Sounds too much like Taurus.

Nissan Extrema? Doesn't sound quite right for a big truck.

Nissan Gigantica? Sounds too much like Galactica as in "Battlestar Galactica".

Nissan Universe? Sounds too existential.

Nissan Gladiator? Reminds me too much of actor Russell Crowe.

Nissan Humongous? Okay, now we're getting silly.

Nissan Maximus? Risky. Sounds like a male enhancement drug.

Nissan Titanic? Getting close. However, full name recalls an old ship disaster. Not good!

Nissan Apollo? Not bad. Has a nice ring to it. Reminds me of the moonshot program and to some extent the Nova based car from Buick back in the 70's.

Nissan Nuclear? Uhh??

Nissan Telstar? Is it a truck or an orbiting satellite.....get real!

Oh well....it looks like Titan was the best name chosen and maybe Apollo for a close second. The Nissan Apollo.....hmmm....it does have a nice ring to it. However, I like the name "Titan" better.

Or maybe...

Or maybe they just pulled it out of the south end of some north bound marketing genius

Webster's says...

"one that is gigantic in size or power : one that stands out for greatness of achievement"

I guess Nissan can call that two out of two!
