The Baja T/A is a very heavy, very strong tire for off road racing. I'd be more concerned about the $$$ because they are not cheap and your best bet is to find them second hand from a racer.
The other thing to watch out for when talking about the baja T/A is some people get them confused with the BFG "project" tire which is similar to the baja T/A, but is a tire sold to racers only. That tire is a beast and is the one, to the best of my knowledge, is not DOT approved.
The baja T/A is a great tire, but I think for all around use there are better tires out there. If your into high speed off road, then it is a great tire.

There's a speed cutout when 4x is engaged, and up to that speed, you would not really see the benefit of the T/A's over something sturdy like a BFG AT or MT.
I would have no use for the Baja T/A's but this 4x speed cut out raises some questions.
Are you saying that if you are in 4x4 high range there is a speed limitation different from the speed limiter we are all familiar with (112-116)? How does it work? Is it rpm or speed based. Is part of the VDC or ABLS system? This is something new to me. I would have thought I would have come across this in talking to my off-road buddies or in reading the various off-road publications.
We realize that in low range, speed is limited by gearing. Is that what you are talking about?
I assumed that with full-time 4x4 high range activated on soft terrain, the only limitation would be the normal speed limiter. Not that I want to drive more than 110 or so in the dirt or mud (or anywhere close to that), but I'd like to know more about this.

Why do the Baja 1000 trucks use the Baja tires and the Dakar rally trucks use the Mud Terrain?
I can't give you an exact answer, but can at least offer food for thought. The baja trucks don't run a lot in dunes or soft sand. It is normally rocky dirt roads or harder pack. I don't know how much "floatation" the baja T/As would provide. I think the Dakar trucks see a more varied terrain and that the mud terrains provide better all around traction.

Glad I asked. Did not know any of this! Thanks for the pics too. Weight and price made up my mind, I'll stick to the mud terrains.

K-mu, they are too heavy of a tire for the cars that run in the ralley races. These tires are designed for big trucks and big buggies. And, even our Titans don't have enough power to see the advantage of this type of tread design. I will see if I can dig up some pics or post a link to vid to show what they were design for.

Here's a video of the Herman Motorsports trophy truck driven by Damon Jeffries. I worked at the place that built this (Porter Race Cars), but only for a couple months. VIDEO
That is awsome. I want suspension like that for my truck. :
How much does a buggy like that cost? And how do they select drivers for teams?

What, no comments about there not being any mud or water holes in that vid. C'mon, where's the love?
Thats a freaking awsome video Greg, THX... I know what those roads can do to our trucks and OEM tires, I drive about 5 miles per day in the Sonoran desert and its bouncy very very bouncy...
