Baja T/A

Anybody out there have the BF Baja T/A on there truck? How do you like it? Post some pics if you have'em, I'd like to see them. Also anyody have pics of that baja titan. I did some searches but I only come up with a couple and well there not that cool. I did a few google searches and I got the same pics. Post them if you got them. Thanks guys

You mean the Baja T/A tires? These are meant for off-road racing, and are very heavy!! Not an ideal street tire...

With respect, maybe he is not looking for a street tire? Maybe he does some off-roading? Likes to play in the dirt? Check out his profile.

I would debate the issue of whether those Baja T/A's are any heavier than the same size "street" tire.

I do a good bit of off-roading. I have a CJ5 with 36 inch tall Interco Super Swampers. Weight does go up when you increase tire diameter 5 inches! But when I ran 31 inch Swampers on that Jeep before I lifted it, they did not weigh any more than the Goodyear AT's they replaced.

And even with the big 36 inch Swampers on 15 inch rims (lots of sidewall to allow for running very low tire pressures), the extra weight has not been a problem, even though the little CJ just has a straight 6 engine.

I might be wrong on this, but it has not been my experience that off-road tires are heavier than their street counterparts in the same size.

However, according to BFG's web site, the Baja T/A is not yet available in a size that will fit our trucks without modification. Either you will have to get some 15 inch rims to run the 33's, or if you run 17 inch rims, you'll need serious lift - six inch suspension lift to run the 35's and also about a 3 inch body lift on top of that to run the 37's. And yes, those 35's and 37's will be heavier. You may also have engine management computer issues with the taller tires. I'm not sure about that.

A serious off-roader would not hesitate to get some nice aftermarket 15 inch rims in our bolt pattern and put those 33's on there. Kind of an anti-bling thing.

You can keep your present tires and wheels, run them on the street, and switch to the off-road tires for week-end or vacation fun. It doesn't take much time to swap them out.

Then get a play tire....the Baja is a race tire, I don't think it's DOT.
Heavy tires need accomidations to work correctly, different springs & shocks. These tire were designed to race, on race vehicles.
By the way, the Baja T/A's are not cheap!

Yah, a 4x4 truck should not have the Baja T/A's. There's a speed cutout when 4x is engaged, and up to that speed, you would not really see the benefit of the T/A's over something sturdy like a BFG AT or MT.

I had no idea they were 'significantly' heavier, but almost DOUBLE the plys in the sidewall? would make sense I guess.

Most of the competition prerunner or Baja trucks I see on the speed channel have the Baja T/As so they must be worth their weight or the pros wouldn't use them.

As far as pics... the CST (California Super Truck) Long Travel Titan they built had those tires and looked GOOD!! I have pics here somewhere from the Sand Sports Expo.

I checked. The Baja T/A's are street legal and would be available in a 33 inch tall 10.5 inch width, which would fit without rubbing, but would require 15 inch rims. BFG is very proud of them. Prices are outrageous:

I'd go with BFG AT in the latest compound for an AT tread type, as an alternative. I do love those Interco Swampers, though for the wet bad stuff. They are very noisy, but will do amazing things. Can get either type pretty reasonably.

Here's a few pics of those tires on CST's Long Travel Titan at the Sand Sports Expo, Pamona Fair Grounds earlier this year.

This truck kicks a$$! I'd bet this tire has the advantage at HIGH off-road speeds when impacting obstacles like the lip of a wash or large rock or something. Sounds like it holds a bead better.

well let me tell you how they are....
i bought a set from a race truck driver who used them at the baja 1000. there was a little over 1/2 thread left on them and it lasted me about 50,000 miles. they are a heavy tire, and are rock solid. they were excellent on the road, especially while turning, w/ the extra sidewall my truck had minimal body lean. nothing can puncture those tires.
if they make 33x12.5x17 i would buy them in heart beat!!!

You are right. I was not thinking about the size of the brake discs and calipers. Probably can't go below 17. It's a shame because there sure are a lot of great off-road tires in 15 and 16 inch sizes.

What I was trying to say was that they are very heavy, and very expensive, both not ideal for a street tire with the "off-road tuff" look that so many guys seem to like.

I just sold a set of 37 bajas last week. They a re a very heavy tire, designed to be raced on. Yes, a 35" baja will work on titan with shock 17's just fine, Bob Grahm is currently runnign that set-up on his race truck, and only has 2.5" of lift. Keep in mind that Baja's are designed to "slip" and dont actually off the best in off road traction. These tire were designed with 6000lb Trophy Trucks (can someone post a pic of a good TT? since im computer illiterate) in mind with 700+ hp, the tread is designed to last a long time and not "bite" to keep drivelines alive. Yes they look cool, yes they last FOREVER on the street, yes 35's will fit on a factory wheel, yes you will loose milage and wear parts out faster, yes you will loose acceleration because they are much heavier than a conventional 35" dirt tire, and yes they will cost more than 2x what a nice 35" tire will run. but you will be the only one in your neighborhood with a set.
