That's what I mean about tapping into factory harnesses... bad news if you don't know what you're doing! In-line fuse is always a good idea. Better safe than sorry is right.
Just splice in a separate line from the battery and use the xterra switch listed here. To use them with lo-beams use the OEM switch on the stalk. To use 'em with hi-beams use the xTerra switch. The xTerra switch if closed, will have them on regardless of hi/lo position. Works just fine.
Now. I've been down lots of tracks or on the beach in Baja and want all the friggin light I can get. I want all the buggers on and then some.
I am going to do one of these two things.
1. Splice a relay into the hi-beam 12+ that close a circuit to a splice to the lo-beam 12+. Result - lo-beams remain on with hi-beams. In case that is really illegal, I'll:
2. Add another switch and relay to manually give 12+ to the lo-beams at will.
You can feed any of the lights 12+ from numerous switches and all at once. They don't care where it's coming from. They'll just get the 12+ from several routes. Kind of like a river that splits and then rejoins. Same amount of water going downstream.

The low beams DO stay on with the high beams. Save yourself the time. If you want more light, change to Silverstars.

Re fogs with hi's. They are nice off-road as the light up the side of the road and corners. As ours our recessed, I'm not sure how well they work.
The way that I have my fogs wired, they are on anytime that the parking lights are on, as long as my dash switch is on. So my fogs can be on with just parking lights, low beams and/or high beams. They do a decent job of lighting, but I wish they were a bit brighter, even though there is a definite difference between having them on or off.
I wired mine using a switch made for the Xterra, Pathy, Pickup, etc. that fit perfectly into one of the blanks above the parking brake. Here is a link to my write up in the FAQ forum so you can see how I did it. It's pretty simple to do... Parking Lights WITH FOG LAMPS!!
