100K mile tune-up time....

for my wife's Maxima! Ha! Gotcha didn't I?

What kind of maintenance is needed at 100K and what should I expect to pay? The car needs new struts and tires soon too. I think I'm just going to get all this done at the same time.

Owners manual should list everything needed for 100k.

Every manufacturer and model is different. Some big things are usually timing belt, accesory belt, plugs, fuel filter, brake fluid and coolant if never changed before, etc.

If the timing belt is part of the maintenance you can expect to pay around $800-$1000 for the the maintenance. Allot of todays cars have the water pump in a location that the timing belt must be removed to get to it. If this is the case for your wifes car it would be a good idea to replace it when you have this maintenance done.

There hasn't been a timing belt in the Maxima for years. Don't let em' rape ya for a 100k service. Real the maintanence schedule to see what it calls for. You can do it all yourself for pennies. Change the oil, sheck the belts and top off fluids....that's probably it. Don't go for all the BS things like flushing the power steering fluid or brake fluids. Those don't need changing. The manual will tell you all you need to know.

www.Maxima.org ... 100k service isn't supposed to be a big one, 90k should have been. By big I mean less than $500-$600 at a dealer (more like $200 if you DIY). Fuel filter, sparkplugs, new belts, all your fluids, brakes, general lube, comprehensive inspection is all part of the service. VQ30DE motor uses a timing chain so don't worry about that, also water pump isn't replaced until necessary.

Struts will run you about $800 installed by a dealer, about $400 if you buy them from Tirerack (look for KYB GR-2s as a nice OEM replacement) and have a private mechanic replace them.

Tires totally depend on what you like and what size wheel you have. Can had as cheaply as $200 for a decent set of 15", as expensive as $800 for a nice set of 17" 5th Gen SE wheels. What year is the Maxima?

I own a 1996 Nissan Maxima so I'm quite familiar with them, let me know if you have any problems or need any more help!

It's a loaded Limited 99. It's really nice and my wife loves it. I had a '93, before I got the beast, and it ran like new at 165K! I was a member of Maxima.org for a long time till I got rid of the '93. I liked my '93 better than my '99. Sad that I sold it , but I love the truck too!

Have you had to replace your direct ignition coils yet? I've heard they're ~$100 a pop! I've also heard you're supposed to replace them at 100K, but others have told me that I don't need to replace them till they go bad. I'll stick with the latter of the 2.

I went to the junk yard recently and bought a sunroof wind visor for $10 and got a new-looking set of floor mats for FREE! Brings some good life back to the car. Now all I got to do is get the tires & struts replaced and get the thing buffed!

Thanks for the info guys!

I've heard so many people say they like the 3rd Generation better than the 4th, and I can understand why (mainly IRS and much more solidly built). I am looking to buy a low mileage one since I'm sort of a Maxima freak and I know they can be had cheaply.

Anyways the ignition coils should never need to be replaced, however the 1999 year was infamous for having them go bad. Reason be that they used different coil packs than in the older cars, either Mitsubishi or Hanshin it slips my mind now. They are ridiculously easy to replace, so I would just wait on replacing them if I was you. From the dealer they are about $80 a piece, however you can buy a set from a junkyard for that price. Also just because one goes bad it is absolutely no indication that the others are going, so in that respect you may just want to buy 1 new one and hold onto it until time comes that one of yours goes bad.

BTW that SE-L model sure is nice with the perforated leather and tinted gauges/wheels.. hold on to it! They will run hundreds of thousands with few small problems (such as your coil packs).
Good luck,
-Cyrus

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for! Her car has the side impact air bags too, which is really rare. It's a safe car and is nice and sporty. I used to have a '93 SE that was completely black with tan leather. She was a beaut!!! That car would haul too!

My major complaint about my wife's '99 is the stupid tranny. It doesn't like to downshift when it should. When I come to a rolling stop, it always wants to start in 2nd or sometime 3rd. I asked the mechanic and he said it's not a problem, but many people complain about it. Oh well.

I was sure to replace the water pump on my Titan at 4,500 miles...Oops, it went bad, went ahead and got the rotors turned as well, since they had 4,500 miles on em.
