Big Tow removal

I bought my Titan with the big tow package and I really did not want that option on the truck. It basicly was free as part of the negoiting I had done.

The question, Can the Tow thing be removed and increase the gas mileage ? I have read numerous posts on here that the big tow package decreases gas mileage and has something to do with the gear ratio ?

Any feedback would help

You would have to replace the ring gear and pinion, and the BCM due to the different ratio causing incorrect speedo readings. That would cost more than you would ever recover in any increase in mileage. I really don't think you will see that much difference in mileage. Leave everything as it is. You never know when you may need the tow package.

According to Nissan, tow package equipped Titans don't get any different milage than the rest. The lower gearing would tend to make me believe it but...probably not enough to even notice. Besides, the same lower gearing should help excelleration then.

My previous Titan was a 4x4 KC offroad package. Now I own a 4x4 CC with the Big Tow and for some reason I have been getting better gas milage. I thought for sure bumping up tp the CC would decrease my fuel economy, so far it has been the exact opposite.

I would like to go on the record as saying that I love Big Tow!!

I needed to get infront of someone very quickly after a light yesterday to get on the highway and she didn't disappoint. I launched quickly and powerfully with the rear squatting from all the torque. Then when I cleared the car I was passing, I checked my huge side mirror to ensure I was clear and then into the right lane and onto the highway.

If I never tow a thing in my life, that right there was worth the $400

There is no evidence that the big tow lowers your gas mileage. My brother actually put *lower* gears in his Jeep Cherokee to get better mileage. The stock gears were too high for the tires he had and he was getting 11-14. He put the lower gears in and now he's gettin 15-18.
If you took a poll on mileage, you wouldn't be able to tell who had big tow and who didn't.

If the window stickers still have any credibility with anyone, they only showed a 1mpg difference. The only thing that would save you gas these days now that you have the mighty 305HP beast under foot. Is a carpool. There is no way in heck to own and drive one of these trucks without gettin on it sometimes. Just smile and keep pumpin.

The big tow package is definitally great. I had the same situation with my truck. I wanted a base SE 4x4 but they had one with popular and big tow. We negotiated to the price I wanted for the base, so I sorta got the packages for free. The tow mirrors are the best, at first I was gonna trade them out but now I love them. You can adjust them to see down the sides of the truck and then see both rear wheels/lower half so parking and backing into spots is a breeze. Tranny temp gauge is also a good feature.

Even if you don't own anything to tow, the hitch is a nice thing to have. You can pull cars that are stuck, pull chain link fences taught, pull up hedges, and ocassionally you will have the need to rent or borrow a utility trailer.

Big Tow does more than tow big

That innocuous receiver on the back of your truck is one handy dandy accessory once you understand how innovative it is. You'll never know how you lived without one!
Besides accepting a trailer hitch, you can do lots more. Once fine feature I have always used my hitch for is mounting a BBQ on it for fabulouso picnics.
I have attached some photos to offer just a few of the myriad applications for a hitch.
The slightly tighter rear axle ratio that also comes with the Big Tow package has proven not to detract from mileage but afford additional low end grunt for more effective power take off.

hey skytop, how do you like your viper? I'm thinking of getting 95 or so GTS in a few years. I was looking at an older Ferrari, but I think I would rather have the Viper. I want something to park in the garage and take out for fun on the weekends everyonce in a while.

Ferrari

I would not tell anyone what to get. I believe that people should make and be responsible for their own mistakes!

I will however, offer you this thought.....
Ferrari's are pure sex but require cubic dollars to maintain properly.
Vipers are low tech but offer great bang for the buck.

Cheers!
