nnakicksass, what brand of full syn and what weight did you use.I have gotten about 20.5 hy at ~68-70 with Mobil 1 5w30.I can get as bad as 12 in very heavy city(New Orleans),or 16.6 in city when I spend about half the time on expressways.Thanks.Charlie PS You guys built a really nice efficient engine-all this power-pushing a 5000 lbs brick ,but we can still hit 20 mpg.!
and i'm being a lead foot 90% of the time. can't help it with that sexy rumblin' sound.
That could be a major problem there as well, I noticed that when I drive "normal" I get alot better mileage than when I want to punch it all the time and or race other cars.
My GPS does the same thing. I was wondering if my GPS was off for some reason. I drove to Atlanta last week and got 16 mpg with me driving at 75 on cruise and 20 mpg with my dad driving 65. I have exhaust and intake and full amsoil synthetics...
Also my engine is running very rich. Prob has some effect on the gas milage.

PHOEBISIS: I know it was Mobile 1 and I believe the weight was either 5w30 or 10w. Reason I don't know is one guy bought all the oil. We gave him the money and he purchased the oil. That way we knew everyone had the same oil and the same time. He even talked to a local express lube to do the oil change for almost nothing. Was great for a while, now I have to take back over.
I am waiting on oil results to come back to see what is in it. I probably will spend the extra for oil to make up for in gas mileage.
nnakicksas, thanks.Did you guys check and 3.36 equipped Titans? We did a crude survey a year or so ago,and it showed the 2.94 2wd leading the pack(about 19.5 mpg) with about a 1-2 mpg advantage over 3.36 equipped 2wd Titans. The survey was "best single fillup",so it was almost all-All Highway.
The advantage 1-2 mpg -10%-the 2.94's had over the 3.36 was just too much for a 15% change in gearing.I know the internal motor friction component just can't be responsible for a 155 decrease in mpg.I'm thinking that the 3.36 folks are just more aggressive accelerating and probably drive at higher speeds in general than the more mpg conscious 2.94 frugal types-like me-who will "brag"about their mpg.
Did you guys test any 3.36's?
This motor-trans combo is a real winner.Nissan didn't cheap out-forged crank,antifriction-moly coated pistons-on the components.Ford on the other hand cheaped out on their new 5.4 from the very beginning with 3 valves instaed of 4.I have 3 valves on my 1983 Honda 500-Honda Ascot V-Twin!!Typical Ford "better idea".Nickle and dime themselves from a very good truck, too a very good"if it wasn't such a dog" truck.I don't care much about interior trim cheapouts-heck I bought a XE KC 2WD-,but please put the $$ where it counts-motor-trans.
My Titan actually beats the highway mpg-18- I got with my 400 lb lighter 4.7 Tundra accesscab(KC)-a good 1.5 mpg better.City is close to the same. The 5.4 Ford and 5.3 Chevy do well on the highway(about the same as Titan)-but they have a lot less of what you buy a motor for-POWER-ACCELERATION!
Great motor-trans.Thanks.Charlie
For the longest while I was getting 9-10 MPG when everyone else were claiming 12-16, I thought that was BS and stuck with it. Then I decided to go to the dealer to see if it was a problem with my truck, they took about 4hrs to reflash my computer, after about two tanks of gas I started to check MPG and it went up to 12 city. BTW I had a LE CC 4X4. So maybe you can go that route.

LE CC 4X4 - Avg. is 12-13 and I do almost all city driving w/lots of stop and go. I have 4 friends who have Titans and their results are the pretty much the same. I don't believe the people who are claiming 16+ MPG, unless they are doing pretty much all highway with lighter trucks and are traveling downwind and downhill both ways. I've seen claims on this site of people saying their getting close to 20MPG. I hope they are, but I won't believe it untill I see it. Everything I've seen first hand says 12-15 is the best you're going to get, and the 15 is only if you're doing mostly freeway driving.

Snap, you are right. My heavy city mpg=12.If I am doing "city" but do maybe 50% of that city on expressways in the city,I can get 16mpg.This is what is happening with folks who are getting 14-16 mpg city;they aren't in real 'city" with maybe 4 stops-redlights per mile.I can get 20 on the highway if I leave it in CC and do about 65-68mph.
My truck is a stripped XE KC 2WD-the lightest with the tall gearing.
Regular city-no expressway-for these Titans is ~12 or so.Charlie

Phoebisis: will have to get back to you on this one. Never really thought about it. My Titan sounds alot like your only a 4X4 version. I bought for a hunting truck. I always wanted a full-size and after working at the powertrain plant and on the V-8 line, I knew I can trust that motor. Matter of fact, the engine I have in my Titan was built by the night-shift in which I was a part at that time. So I can truthfully say, I built part of the engine in my truck! Pretty kewl!
I just rolled 6000 miles on my 05. been getting 435 to 475 miles to a tank would get more but i fill up when the low fuel light comes on. i average about 16.5 to 17 mpg in town and got 19 on the hwy driving to dallas. i also have a lead foot and lout pipes.

nnakickazz, wow!I didn't realize you got the 21.3 mpg with a 4x4!Pretty spectacular! I need an excuse to get on the interstate for a trip. All my driving lately has been city-I occasionally hit the city interstate,I-10,but not for long.Juma got 22+ with a 2WD like mine.He is hoping to do better once he gets away from the W Coast and the mandated high Oxygen lower energy gasoline. We don't have much of an air quality problem in New Orleans,so my suspicion is that we get the higher energy content gasoline, but I'll have to check to be sure.
Built your own motor-and got paid for it-not bad!!I don't guess you knew it would be yours while you were building it(?)-maybe you could have weighed the pistons-rods etc and essentially blueprinted it.Judging for your mpg-it is obviously a very efficient-tight- motor.
In our crude little survey we had very few results-2 I think-from 4X4's with the 2.94 rear end.Most 4x4 results were from 3.36 rear ends.The 2 2.94's 4X4 were very good-18 mpg-relative to the several 4X4 3.36-about 16 mpg.
I'm tempted to trade for an 05-06 to get a FFV and some of the other improvements-better QC-tailgate-headrests-and maybe,maybe-go CC instead of KC and use the Titan for a trip vehicle thus dumping our very comfortable Honda Pilot(good hy-22.5 loaded 74 mph AC blasting, but city is no better than Titan12-14mpg in heavy summer-AC- city)
I really shouldn't spend the close to $10,000(to go XE CC 2WD),so it probably won't happen. My wife greatly prefers the Pilot to the Titan-no surprise there. My only other reservations(other than $$,wife) is that I know I have a "good" motor in this one,I would hope I would get just as "good' a motor in the next one.
Well,I have run on-as usual.Thanks.Charlie
i have a question about my gas mileage. i currently have 2600miles on my titan. right now i'm getting about 235miles to one tank, acutally it'll take about 22 galllons when i fill up. that's about 10mpg. i remember my very frist tank got 106miles. i sorta agree on my truck getting a little better, the last few tanks was about 9mpg. is this usually for a truck that's has low miles? i've been told that the gas mileage should increase as the miles on the truck increase. i don't know if it was here or on clubtitan, but someone mentioned that i should start noticing a difference after 3000miles. any comments? oh also, i have an exhuast on it. and i'm being a lead foot 90% of the time. can't help it with that sexy rumblin' sound.
That's not normal mileage for a Titan. I'm getting about that while towing a 28' camper! Between 14 and 16 otherwise.

Real secret revealed for best fuel mileage and engine longevity
O.K. I'll pass along a long time insider's secret to getting the most fuel mileage out of any new vehicle. This was first told to me by an old engine builder back in the early 1970's and I have followed this advice and regime ever since with great results.
When you go to pick up your new vehicle, have a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil with you. Yup, the name sounds a bit funny, but it's a solid time tested product. It is a premium top end lubricant. It is poured into the fuel tank before you drive off the lot. This will NOT damage your engine or catalytic converter in any way. The lubricant in the fuel mix will reach areas of your new engine that simply cannot be reached otherwise. Valve seat surfaces, rings and cylinder walls, drive train bearings will all immediately benefit by reduced friction, superior honing and far better mating of surfaces. It optimizes the break in process.
This super finishing pays real dividends in best possible compression, power production and reduction of internal engine friction and engine longevity. This is not hype but fact. Break in period is extended a bit as parts mate to each other more gradually but you will be thankful in the long run. You will obtain better fuel mileage, performance and engine longevity. Add additional Marvel oil during the next two tanks to complete the process. This is not an expensive regime but a real benefit.
