I only got that once. I was driving at night with no traffic and had windows down a little for cool night air. Like I said, there was almost no traffic. I filled up while leaving Huntsville on I-565 and right before I got into Birmingham. Then I topped off on other side of Birmingham and again once I got to Montgomery. I didn't want the city traffic to affect the mileage. So it was purely highway. I was by myself too, no girlfriend, kids or excess bags. I should have put the tail gate down, but I never do so I left it up. Cruise was set 70-72. The only time the cruise wasn't driving was when I started to get off the interstate to fuel up and bathroom. I usually stop in between both cities for bathroom, but didn't want the stop to bring mpg down.

On a usual trip down to Montgomery, I average 18 to just under 20. Depends on traffic.

According to some wind tunnel testing, putting the tailgate down actually hinders your gas mileage. Somewhere, a ways back, somebody actually posted the link to the group that did the testing. I seem to remember it being Car & Driver... I'll look and see if I can find it...

Couldn't find it on Titantalk but found lots of references elsewhere...
Here is one...
