somebody school me on NOS!
can someone tell me what nos ACTUALLY does (duh, besides go faster) and what kind of burst of speed it gives and for how long. how do you decide how much of a shot your engine/tranny can handle.
can you use it with a turbo or not?
what do you have to do to the titan to get it used correctly (can you hear me 'head'?)
just curious as to why they will let you use that in racing if it is a 'cheater' gas and not 'real' hp.
why do some engines respond well and others not (read:rice racers vs. ford pinto, etc )
thanks.

to go faster you need to burn more gas. to burn more gas in a single compression and powerstroke you need to get more oxygen into the cylinder to mix with the gas. NOS or Nitrous Oxide is oxygen mixed with nitrogen (to make it less dangerous) and is sprayed into the intake to give that extra oxygen so that you can burn more gas.
there are two types of NOS systems, wet and dry. A dry NOS system injects the Nitrous Oxide and lets the regular fuel injectors add more gas. A wet NOS setup injects NOS into the intake and some extra fuel to go with it.
A turbo charger or supercharger will also add extra oxygen to the cylinder by compressing regular atmospheric air. the more you compress the air, the more o2 molecules you can fit into the cylinder and the more fuel you can burn with it.
You can use nitrous oxide with a turbocharger, but if you're doing that then your really asking a lot of your bottom end and driveline components. I don't think I would do it on a daily driver. Unless it was a professionally built racing engine.

On Ebay it can mean New Old stock.Translation-it is an ancient part that was never used.It will be dusty, scratched, dented but never installed. It usually means aftermarket. If it is a factory part they will call it OEM(Original equipment manu).
Like above NOS is nitrous oxide-N20 A molecule with 2 nitrogen atoms attached to one oxygen atom. With enough heat the N2O breaks down and releases Oxygen which effectively increases the amount of air you have taken in-like a supercharger with no pulleys, turbo etc.O-as O2- is what burns the gasoline.Adding N20 is like adding LOX-Liquid oxygen-same stuff they use in the space shuttle. You can add huge amounts of power-150 hp-for $1000-waaay cheaper and more effective that the usual hotrod stuff-cams,exhausts,intakes,higher compression pistons.
The main downside is that a tank of it(10-15 lbs total weight) is probably only good for maybe 1 minute-hotrod stuff-is "good' all the time.It also is hard on your motor, but so is equivalent hot rod stuff if it makes the same power..Luck,Charlie

As far as people saying it's cheating (or the infamous whine "only babies use bottles") it's because they got beat by it. Period. In my opinion it is just like any, AND I MEAN ANY, other mod out there that adds power. Dollar for dollar you will not beat the performance gain that nitrous gives you.
You can use it on a turbo motor. There are kits out there for it.
For use on the titan you just need to figure out a way to get the fuel to the solenoid. I use a modified stock line.
Why does it work better on some engines and not others? You might as well start another 'best oil' thread.

Another N20+-no effect on MPG-all other mods decrease MPG.
Another big plus of N20 is that it has absolutely no effect on MPG!!Ok,let me rephrase that-it has no effect when you aren't actively using it-those 15 second squirts-maybe 5-6 squirts per bottle.
Almost all other hotrod mods either decrease you mpg, increase the noise,or decrease driveability--throttle response or low end "pull".Now a CAI-noisy) might not decrease your mpg,but they are usually worth 5-10 hp max and some are literally negative add ons.Same story on headers(noisy)-or and cat backs-good ones worth 5-15 hp,bad ones lose hp.Cams-pistons-porting are hugely expensive because you have to get into the motor-and there aren't any for the Titan. If there were they wouldn't be worth more than 15%hp increase.
Belt driven Superchargers decrease mpg all the time-cost $6000.Turbo chargers decrease mpg less, but there is a bit of lag and they will cost~$6000.
The Turbo or belt supercharger would be worth about a 40% increase(80-100 RWHP).Hard to go higher than 7 psi because the compressed heated charge is prone to pinging at over 7 psi(about 45% over atmosphere). The N20 actually cools the charge-big plus.
Our own the head has used a 150 HP shot which has cost him about $1000 and gotten him about 100+RWHP.
All these preformance mods will void your warranty-if the dealer is a Pri..,so you had better not use something you can't quickly return to factory. This pretty much rules out headers, and cat backs, supercharger of any type, cams, pistons, porting .The CAI and N20 can be installed so that the vehicle can be returned to factory look in 1/2 hr or so.
A 50-75 hp shot should be pretty easy on the motor, and cheap-under $1000.
Do it and let us know how it goes!!Luck,Charlie
PS Lighter wheels-tires are a good mod that can also increase acceleration and increase mpg.Go for smaller diameter and you'l get even more accel, but might lose a bit on the MPG.It will be very hard to measure your improvement with just lighter wheels-but it will be there.Same story on mpg-tiny gains are hard to measure.Other than cost, lighter wheels-tires are a free lunch performance wise-all gain,no loss..
Nitrous setups can be set up differently depending on what type of "shot" or hp increase you are looking at, and how efficiently you want your kit to work. for smaller hp increases or "shots" you can just get a pretty basic kit and the nitrous (and/or fuel) will be injected into the intake pipe prior to the throttle body. However this setup is only ok for smaller amounts, larger increases of power require an even distribution of added fuel and nitrous to each cylinder in which case you would use a direct shot of nitrous where you tap the lines directly into your intake manifold per cylinder, so that each cylinder gets the same amount of fuel and nitrous.
There are different brands out there, each kit is a little different in its own right. you can use this with turbo or SC, but weather you would actually want to or not is debateable based on each situation....
for the titan, a basic kit would work fine, something up to maybe 100hp. you would want install colder spark plugs, and i would recomend higher octane fuel if possible.
There are a lot of questions that can be answered by visiting the main sites of the nitrous companies such as NOS, NS, ZEX, etc...

why does it need to be a 'shot'? why can't nos be a constant or semi constant ability (like turbo) when you reach a certain rpm or throttle acceleration--such as 'stomping it'?
is it because of transportability or space or what?
thanks, this has been a very informative thread!

Yup.
Best NOS info I've ever gotten, in person or on the net, thanks guys!

with a bunch of stuff on it.
Because of limited amount of Nitrous oxide you can carry.
The main reason is that you can only reasonably carry so much Nitrous oxide.A tank that is about 20"x10" carries about 40-60 seconds worth.60 minutes would take a heck of a big tank,or 60 small ones.It just isn't practical.
More importantly, the beauty of N20 is that YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE IT ALL THE TIME LIKE SUPERCHARGERS,CAMS AND OTHER HOT RODDING STUFF.This hotrod stuff isn't a free lunch,it cost mpg and engine wear. You still have to spin that SC when you are driving down to the grocery store. The beauty of N20 is you just use it-and pay the mpg and wear penality-when you need it-what sort of "race" lasts more than 10-15 seconds?None, because from a stop you are doing almost 90 mph in a Titan-with Nitrous you could be doing 95-100 in 15 seconds.Just isn't practical to use it longer than a few seconds at a time. This limitation is actually a big plus-one minute of boost in a 10x20" "box" .Charlie
This is all interesting. But how much does a tank of NOS cost and where do ya go get a refill?

when i was 16-19 and into the racing scene. i used to hang out almost ever weekend at a local popular shop in miami called " speed shop" they installed turbo's, nos kits, headers, exhaust, etc. the shop is still around, more popular, and have expanded into a bigger place. i used to pat $20.00 to fill up a small bottle of about 5-10 lbs. those $20 would last me 1 single race. yeah it was expensive but what counted was the bragging rights you had after a win. im totally done with that. im 23 now, i own a 05 SE titan, just bought a house, and will get married in about 1-1/2 years.
