considering new tires (Michelin LTX M/S)

I am considering upgrading to the Michelin LTX M/S tires for my Titan w/ BT and OR. The closest OE size this tire comes in is the 265-70R17, which is 31.8" tall. OE tire size is 33".

Will running a smaller 31.8" tire adversely effect anything on the Titan? I know that the speed-o will be off a bit. (any ideas how to correct a speed-o after a tire size change?)

Based on some calculations, I estimate that the RPM's @ 75 MPH will be up by 100 with this new tire size. (see www.ring-pinion.com for calculator.) Will this decision to change tires to a smaller size drastically impact MPG's?

Thanks for your input!

Darren

I don't think the Michelins would be an upgrade. I've used both on varius vehicles and wasn't nuts about them. If you don't like the BFs RTs, look seriously at the BF KOs. Otherwise, I don't think that small a difference in size will adversly affect anything but the speedo.

I put a set of Michelins on my last truck (F150) @ 50K and traded the truck in at 109K with a lot of tread left. They were rated at 80K, I think. I was extremely happy with them. They were a bit expensive... I think I paid about $850 for the set of 4. I have the Goodyears on the Titan and am pretty happy with them. I have never been a fan of Firestone/BF Goodrich tires but honestly haven't driven on any for years.

The BFG KO is a great tire. I ran it on two other vehicles and was really impressed. I used the KO's to wheel in a toyota PU and a Jeep Cherokee. The KO is more of an aggressive tire than I want for my needs.

Any idea correct the speed-o in the Titan? (in the Jeep it was a matter of changing out a $15 gear in the sending unit -- super simple!)

Thanks...

I vote also for the BFGs. Michelin makes one that fits, the cross terrain SUV that comes in my size. The LTX A/T is a great tire. The LTX M/S is so so. I had teh LTX A/T on my Grand Cherokee. If you want a more aggressive tread or plan to tow heavy loads, snow, etc, go with the BFG. If you want more of a street tire, go with the correct size cross terrain suv.

I had put BFG on my previous truck, and Michelins on the wife's SUV, at around the same time. We both got around 70k miles on them each, with no real noticable difference. Both are actually made by the same company.

I've used BFs for years but i'm not thrilled with the RTs. I'm thinking of going to the ATs. By the way, Michelln owns BF, which is french owned. I guess at least they arent made in CHina.

I know in my Dodge Ram I just took the vehicle to dealer and had them plug the tire size into their computer and download it to my truck...fixed it in about 10 mins. Not sure on the Titan but I would imagine it would be similar.

Michelin are great tires, never heard anybody say anything bad about them.

I bought a set of BFG ko's about 2 yrs ago for a chevy pickup and two of them were out of round by 15,000 miles. cant say alot about a bfg.

I replaced my Wilderness A/T's in the big Ford recall with Michelin LTX/AT's. Best tire I've ever owned. I pulled at least three screws/nails out of the tread with no flats. Traded with 51K on them and they looked half worn. As someone posted, I'd check out the same size Michelin if available. They're a bit more than other tires, but if you're gonna keep the truck, they're worth it.

If you are a cheapskate, and don't mind a bit shorter tire(it will accelerate faster)you can get 245/70 17 LTX takeoffs on Ebay-a full set like new for ~$250.Dodge uses them as OEM tires on their 17" wheels, and a lot of the Dodge Guys immediately go to bigger tires,or bigger tires and wheels.Luck,Charlie PS Why does dodge use such an expensive tire(and L-RATED),and we get "moderately priced" P-rated tires??
