Nissan Katrina Relief

Guys, I just want to state how proud I am of Nissan stepping up right away to help out with the Katrina disaster.

Yesterday, forty (40) new Titans and ten (10) new Armadas drove off the assembly line at the Canton, Mississippi plant heading south to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to be given to disaster relief agencies.

No one had to ask -- they just did it. Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Honda, etc. are yet to be heard from.

They also donated $500,000.

That's a total gift of $500,000 + 50*$15,000 = $1.25 Million

NICE JOB NISSAN!

Nissan Provides Assistance for Mississippi Hurricane Relief

CANTON, Miss., Aug 30, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Nissan North America, Inc., today said it would donate $500,000 in cash to the American Red Cross and provide 50 full-size trucks to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to assist with relief and recovery efforts associated with Hurricane Katrina.

The storm forced Nissan to halt production at the Canton assembly operation at 11:30 a.m. on Monday in advance of the storm. Production will resume on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

"Nissan is a part of Mississippi, and we're very concerned about what's happening throughout the state as people cope with the effects of this hurricane," said Dan Gaudette, senior vice president, North American Manufacturing and Quality Assurance.

"We asked the state how we could help during this time of crisis, and this is something we can do," he added. "Our vehicles will make a difference by supporting the emergency crews at a time when the help is desperately needed."

The Nissan fleet includes new Nissan Titan full-size pickups and Nissan Armada full-size SUVs, both built in the Canton plant. The Canton plant also produces Nissan Quest minivans, Altima mid-size sedans and the Infiniti QX56 full-size luxury SUV. The plant has a capacity to build 400,000 vehicles annually.

The fleet of vehicles was leased by MEMA for $1 and was delivered Monday afternoon and Tuesday, within hours of the Hurricane Katrina coming ashore on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The term of the lease is 30 days, but may be extended if necessary.

The cash donation will be made to the Red Cross Hurricane 2005 Fund, which funnels money directly to hurricane relief efforts, particularly those linked to Hurricane Katrina.

"We are grateful that Nissan and its employees have chosen the Red Cross to reach out to those whose lives were disrupted by Hurricane Katrina," said Marsha J. Evans, President and CEO of the American Red Cross. "Because of Nissan's help, the Red Cross can supply the shelter, food, emotional support and longer-term recovery assistance that thousands so badly need."

In addition, Nissan will match dollar-for-dollar employee donations to the Red Cross's Hurricane 2005 Fund up to a total of $250,000 in employee contributions.

In North America, Nissan's operations include automotive styling, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing. More information on Nissan in North America and the complete line of Nissan and Infiniti vehicles can be found online at http://www.NissanUSA.com and http://www.infiniti.com.

That's great Big A. I guess the Canton plant made it out without any damage.
I was surprised to get the phone call that our battalion is probably going to be activated to assist the National Guard. Very surprising indeed. I'll be looking for the Armada's and Titan's.

It's nice to see that this "foreign" auto maker is offering assistance, while the great Big 3 "American" automakers are just pushing their "you pay what we pay, and not a cent more" BS. Ford...Dodge(oops, German owned "American" company)...G.M...Where are you? Emergency teams can use all the help they can get, be it vehicles, money, food/water donations, etc.

Thanks Nissan!!! Makes me proud to own one of your products, rather than one of the others. Keep it up.

What would be nice is if the auto companies would give the victims who lost everything additional money back incentives to help them out. Not everybody affected by Katrina has full coverage, so they definitely need all the help they can get...Just a trip through dreamland

It wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit, as I know that many people are suffering horrific circumstances. Makes suffering from higher gas prices seem kinda petty, not that I like it one bit.

God be with all those who have suffered through Katrina. Thank God that it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

This would be a nice idea, my only problem is that I think too many people who didn't suffer would try and take advantage. I have no problem with people looting for food but tennis shoes and football jerseys?

I don't care if they steal necessities such as food and water. If they steal TV's and other non essentials then those who do steal have a special place in hell just waiting with their name on it.

Nissans not stupid. They LOANED (leased for $1) the trucks for 30 days (maybe longer). And they're hoping you'll see Nissan trucks everywhere down there.....even on the news. Smart move.

NFL donated a million. We are going to need alot more money for these folks. This magnitude of devastation has not been seen since 9/11. This may be one of the worst natural national disasters ever! It makes me happy to see big companies stepping up to the plate and doing the right thing. Imagine how much was sent over to the Tsunami vicitms. This is in our backyard folks!

I see your point. From the police side it becomes difficult to differentiate. I would imagine the store owners are under the same idea. Inventory is inventory though.
