Toyota Truck & SUV Recall ~1 Million vehicles

AP: "Toyota Motor Corp. recalled 978,000 sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks over complaints that a rod linking the steering wheel and the wheels could fracture when the steering wheel is turned while the vehicle is stopped. The affected vehicles include the 1990-1995 4Runner SUV, 1989-1995 truck 4WD and 1993-1998 T-100 pickup.

Toyota said its recall would begin in mid-September and was based on seven confirmed cases of the power-steering problem in T100 vehicles. No crashes have been tied to the issue.

Toyota’s profits were down 7 percent to $2.4 billion in the April-June period but the company is generally healthier than its U.S. rivals."

What took them so long? T-100's had this problem from the outset.

I keep telling people that brakes are a non-event in the grand scheme. Imagine loosing steering. I can't imagine why if it can happen sitting still it couldn't happen while driving and having say a pothole torque the steering? So lets recap, a potentially fatal problem takes 16 years to fix, we get new brakes in less than 2. Not bad. So much for "legendary reliability". Don't forget, it took 4 years to admit Tundra had brake issues also.

That's actually incorrect - Toyota admitted pretty quickly there were brake issues with the Tundra as my 2002 was in within the first year 2 seperate times (no thanks to the dealer refusing to put new rotors on at first) to have them replaced, due to having the incorrect size put on at the factory - replacing pretty much the entire brake system under a TSB.
