Have you all ever looked at any of Nissan's global sites, such as the Car sites for the UK or Europe? A turbo diesel is the only option on some vehicles. When I was looking to buy my Xterra about 2 years ago I even asked the stealership about special ordering one with a diesel, like they have in the Frontier in other countries, but no dice. So, Nissan is no stranger to designing and building diesels which makes this story a little more believeable.
Why put a diesel in a VW jetta, or a Tacoma. It would not be moronic it is a more efficent engine that is why they are being used in smaller vehicles they are very popular in europe because of the mileage they get. Now if they put something like the 5.9l cummins in the titan yeah that would be moronic because that motor would far exceed what the frame could handle but a smaller diesel would be legit.
Because it's just not done...period! We're not talking about little TDI VWs, we're talking 1/2 ton trucks. They don't need Diesel engines when a gas engine will do. Again, I don't believe this guy, he has no facts so far.

TDI VW's don't need a diesel when the 2.0l, 1.8T, and VR6 gas motors work just fine, but they have them for fuel economy. The Jeep Liberty is also available in a diesel, although there are 2 gas motor options there too.

Hudson, I never go against on you on anything you say, but this time...I have to disagree. I heard (on here) that Nissan is currently doing a feasability study with a turbo diesel as we speak. Not sure if it's 1/2 ton or 3/4. But it's supposed to be an International motor 4.6L turbo diesel for the '07 Titan.
I do agree that size anymore, doesn't dictate the need for a diesel, but longevity and fuel economy.

Why are you getting upset with me I am just stating my opinion I am not telling you that you are not entitled to yours. To each his own I could see it being usefull you cannot thats cool.
I'm not getting upset at all. The point is, nobody puts Diesels in 1/2 tons here in the US and expecting Nissan to be the first is foolish IMHO. There's simply no demand or need for it. Can it still be done?....of course!.. but highly unlikely in todays day and age. If it were going to be done, it would have been a while back when Diesel fuel was cheaper than regular grade gasoline. Those days are over. If Diesel goes back down to being .30+cents a gallon cheaper than gasoline, and they can make them that won't audibly rattle you out of the drivers seat (yes, they ALL still do that when compared to gas engines) then MAYBE, just maybe.....you'll see more applications for them. Diesels are mostly sold in vehicles made to haul heavy loads like your F-350s and 3500 Rams. They're a very expensive upgrade, usually a $4k to $6k premium over gasoline engines.....kind of costly to someone not hauling 10k+ LBS or not looking to keep their truck over 100k miles...which is where they really shine. Mileage is a few MPG better in some cases but certainly not $5000 better. We'll see I guess but, I'm sticking to my bet that you'll not see a Diesel powered 1/2 ton from any manufacturer anytime soon.
BTW, VWs and other Diesel powered cars were offered because Diesel was (at one point) MUCH cheaper than gas and got a few MPG better mileage. Not for their hauling abilities.

But you forgot to mention that diesel power will give you WAY more mileage. The beetle diesel gets about 50 mpg. Also it has quite a bit of torque at very low RPM. Even more so with that big 6.0 Power stroke has over 500lbs torque while still getting 26mpg. I don't know, diesel builds a strong case. You can have a HD Titan with just a spring change. Heavy Load and a new Tranny.
Yeah, I didn't like to fight when I was a kid. Mainly because it was always that one guy and his four friends that wanted to kick my butt all at the same time.

The diesel VW Golf is rated for 37 city/44 highway, while their 2.0L gas counterpart is rated for 24 city/31 highway. That difference looks pretty substancial. Calculate that for Titan and the numbers would be a 21.5 city/27 highway. I agree with you that Nissan will not be the first in the 1/2 ton diesel market, but the market will emerge in the next 5 years.

Hey, I'm just posting information as I recieve it. You can take it how you want. If your so upset that I'm saying there will be this or that, I'd hate to meet you in person for the chance of saying something wrong and giving you a heart attack.
As far as the "diesel is a waste in a 1/2 ton". If your at all familar with CAFE rules, you'll understand why Nissan is looking at diesels in a 1/2 ton in the next few years. If you don't, look it up and become educatated. Yes, it would be a first in the industry, but with new regulations on diesel fuels coming it will change the whole industry.
Everyone talks about the diesels in other countries. One reason there are so many diesels in other countries other than the cost of regular gas/petrol is that the quality of diesel is that of a much better quality with less variation in it. This is due to different pollution requirements. If you have ever owned a diesel here in the US, you know that you stay away from certain stations diesel because it make your truck run like crap. So, the manufactures here have to make our (USA) diesels run on a wide range of crap diesel when compared to that of everyone elses in foreign countries.

It actually would not be the first 1/2 ton diesel. GM offered their old 6.5 in their 1500 C/K pickups in the early 90s. Read that in a Four Wheeler article a while back, don't have it on me but I'll quote it as soon as I go back and find it.
