got back from maui a couple of days ago

and got the chance to rent new, top of the line solara, mustang and jetta over the week.
the solara was the best car by far--drove like a big caddie and had some 'get up'! i was surprised by this finding, if i was in the market for a mid 20's conv. with a v6, i would definately check it out. the interior was kind of bland and didn't have any cool amenities to write home about but everything did its job well. the rear seats were small but had about the same amount of room the jetta did. the convertable top was electric and felt top of the line.
mustang was the biggest dissapointment of them all. i had the v6-so the v8 would have been WAAYYY better i'm sure--but the v6 felt so underpowered compared to the solara and jetta. no bottom end, decent midrange and sloppy top end. the worst thing of all was the rear design. the back end was so high i had a hard time knowing where the bumper was and what was directly behind me. it was so tall it could have hidden almost anything but a large truck on 30's!!! WORD! i am 6'1 and was freaked out backing up. i can't imagine the problems shorter people or small women would have in it. the convertable roof was electric but the handles to lock in the front felt cheap and chunky.
i liked the boxy front end of the hood, but there was NO room at the inn for Jesus or anyone else to sit in the back seat with anyone larger than about 5'6 in the front seat.
the jetta has the sexiest interior of them all. the interior lights are deep red and purple and come on automatically if it gets dark--even under a bridge! the back seats were cramped as well but at least my 5 year old could have his legs dangling behind my seat without losing circulation! the gauges were the best of any and the power buttons were also the best. the rear view mirrors were too small on the sides. the v6 got up and you could squeal the tires (ahem, so i'm told...) with no problem from a stop. it also had a good midrange pickup but you are going to get left holding your pants if you try to take someone off a roll that has any decent v6 under the hood.
the ride is rough and choppy (pure german!) it has that tight racy feel which is cool but over the long haul it would get tiring 'feeling' the road that much.
which brings me back to the titan--what do all these cars have to do with the titan? well nothing, other than the fact that if i were going to get rid of the truck for any of these upper 20 mpg cars i would hate it! once i got back in the titan there was no comparison--yes the gauges could use some vw and the ride a little toyota and the front end 'maybe' a little (and i do mean 'little') ford, but overall once i got in the big truck put my foot on the floor and made my way to the freeway, i said 'ah, its nice to be home'!!!
