It has to do with quality control, work ethics and personal pride. The "American-Japanese" automaker's production line system is different from the Big 3 makers.
As of today, in Japan, there is still tremendous pride in personal work effort at the production line. This is the same attitude they are trying to spread and encourage (positive move) at their US based production facilities. There is also a slight difference in the quality of cars made by the same automaker (e.g Toyota ) produced from different line (US vs Japanese production line). This evident gap, however, is narrowing steadily as they continue to emphasize Japanese Automobile standards to supplement American ingenuity.
