What's up guys,
I have a question for those who change out their oil filters between oil changes. Do you run the engine to operating temp. and just unscrew the old and screw on the new? Is there a lot of oil that comes pouring out? I just want to decide if it is worth the time and mess to just change the filter during extended oil changes.

There is no benefit to run the engine up to operating temperature if you are just going to change the filter.
And no, a lot of oil will not pour out. The oil filter is above the oil pan. The only oil that will come out is some that is in the filter itself and maybe in the oil galley above it.

The easy answer would be to just change the oil as well. It's not that expensive if you're doing it yourself. If you're going through all the trouble of changing the filter, spend the what.....$30 or so? and do the job right. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for both of the replies. I was thinking of just changing the oil and filter at the same time. Just more peace of mind for myself. I have the Mobile 1 extended life in the engine right now, but don't want to chance running it for more than 7,500 miles. I also was worried about warranty issues if the filter isn't changed during the required intervals, even if the oil is left in longer.
Are there any facts to back up this method? Has anyone got oily samples to back up changing the filter at three or four thousand miles and the oil later? I was just wondering if this decreases engine wear or just peace of mind.

I change the oil filter and oil at the same time - What's the purpose of only changing the oil filter when you're leaving dirty oil in the oil pan

If you really wanted to, you could change the filter by itself. It is above the oil pan, so it won't drain the oil. But the question is, why? Isn't that backwards? Typically, it is acceptable to change the oil more frequently then the filter. Most service intervals specify a filter change every two oil changes. Don't quote me on Titan though, I just change them both with every oil change.
I was kinda tripping out on the thought of only changing the filter but out of politeness was trying to keep my thoughts to myself but I cannot hold it in any longer......Have you been whooped with a stupid stick? Three things will assist in making a combustion engine last for ever....clean oil, clean air and fresh fuel.

I know that people have stated that the freakishly small filter does its job well. But, it just makes me wonder if a filter change between oil change (synthetic longer intervals), is a good idea. As stated, I will change both at once.
p.s. Squid, I know you're out there..... You know you want to get in on this disscussion.

Actually, it is accepted and common practice for drivers using oils such as Mobil 1 15,000 mile extended performance and Amsoil to change the filter half-way through the change interval without changing the oil.

Hey Chip, if you look around here and "other Titan forums" you will find tons of people running the M1 E.P. and Amsoil as well as other extended life synthetics that have had their oil samples analyzed and it has actually been shown that 7500-9000 miles is nothing to these high end oils. The samples @ 7500-9000 have been cleaner than some 1500 conventional samples. The filter on the other hand does need to be replaced because the media will only hold so much debris. That is why most do the filter and top off every 3000 with full changes every 7500-9000. Just my .02
1: I would never do a "filter only" change with conventional oil.
2: It is very common for people that are running high quality sythetics such as Amsoil, Mobil One, and Royal Purple to do "filter only" changes during extended drain intervals.
The proper way to approach the question is this. Run your oil of choice for 3,000 miles. Send a sample into a lab like Blackstone Labs for an oil analysis (I prefer Blackstone). They will send you back a report to see if your oil of choice is holding up and their recommendations on extending it's life. If your oil works well with your engine and can endure extended uses then the smart thing to do is to do a "Filter only" change at mid-life. With a filter as small as the Titans you may want to look into a Purolator Pure-One filter, or Mobil One filter for higher efficiency.
With the quality of some of todays sythetics there is no need to dump out perfectly usable oil just because you hit 3,000 or 4,000 miles.

This is true. The motor oil manufacturers would like you to change your oil every time you fill your vehicle with gas. If you change your oil twice as often as needed, the oil manufacturers make twice the $$$.
It's funny that some of the people that change their oil every 3,000 miles seldom change their transmission fluid, differential oil, coolant, etc. These people would be better off if they changed their oil every 6,000 miles and used the money saved to change these fluids more often.

Very true. The problem here is that there are so many different opinions and facts on the matter that rather than take chances, I change my Mobil1 and filter every 3000 to 4000 miles. It's cheap enough and makes me feel better. Most cars today don't even call for a tranny oil change, and I usually don't keep vehicles more than about 50k miles anyhow. Come to think of it....this is our 14th Nissan and I've never changed a spark plug....EVER!....lol.
