Will 35" spare fit???

I posted this in Wheels/Tires, etc., and had 158 views, but no informative responses. Thought I'd try again here.

"Thread title says it all. I'm switching over to BFG, AT 315/70/17, KO's. Ideally, I'd like to get five of them and mount the spare up underneath where it is now. I'm wondering if it would fit if deflated. Someone here mentioned that they thought that it would.

I'm interested to hear if any of you have done this. It looks like it would be close and with being deflated, it just might work. I have a VIAIR, 400P compressor, so I'm not worried about airing it up when the time comes.

Any one done this?

Regards,

John"

just measure between the frame rails where the spare winches up. If it is more than 35 inches you're set! However, if you deflate the tire then when you tighten the "winch" down to hold the tire in place you could draw the metal rim up against the metal frame and that won't stay tight for very long or will cause metal/metal wear.

Very good point, Vegas. I never thought about it. Is it OK to let the tire with no air for a long time?

If the frame rails are too narrow, maybe you can just deflate it a bit and sotra wedge it in between them. The rails could compress the sides a bit and and then your spare tire "winch" could touch only rubber. Possibly? Its only another 2" though, so chances are there's that much more room underneth.

Maybee I'm missing something here. Why would you deflate the spare tire just to fit it under the truck? That would defeat the purpose of having a spare. If you get a flat tire instead of one flat tire you will have two because you will not be able to use the spare until you inflate it again.

Why not just use the original spare???? It's just for emergencies only. It can't be any worse than one of those "get ya there" doughnut spares.

I already post this question regarding using original spare on CT. Other members said that it might damage your gear.

Well, a spare is supposed to be used for emergencies, right?
I personally wouldn't be afraid to use it as long as you reduced your speed[50mph] and were only going to drive a short distance. I.E. the nearest service station.
As I said earlier, it couldn't be any worse than one of those doughnut spares that a lot of cars and truck use. You just have to exercise some caution.

I would happy if my spare can handle up to 35 mph.

I was thinking the same thing since the Titan doesn't have a mechanical limit slip diffy. I do wonder how the electronic active limited slip would react on the highway though...

It would freak out....for awhile at least. I have the VDC switch, so I'd turn it off.
