I would be scared to shake the hand of the person who put the factory filter on. I performed my first oil change this weekend, went with Mobil 1 EP. Drained the factory dino oil, and spent the next twenty minutes trying to get the factory filter off. I do have a filter strap, however the puny filter on the titan was too small for the strap I have. I have seen the filter wrenches, however I had drained all my oil out and didnt want to have to fill with oil, go to store, to then swap the filter.
Well my forearms are still a little sore, but it finally broke lose. Needless to say I did not put near as much torque on the new filter I installed...about 1/4 turn past tight.
Has anyone else noticed this or did I get a manly man in the factory to put my filter on?

No, you're not the only one. We ALL had to fight the filter to get it loose. From reading all these posts I knew what I was in for and used a small pipe wrench to break it loose. There is no reason for the factory to tighten it that much.

You have two choices in life:
You can stay single and be miserable,
or get married and wish you were dead.
I dont think it has to do with overtightening so much. ive changed it twice on mine and its been hard each time. I just drive a couple nails through it to give the wrench grip on it

I'm about to do my own first oil change on my Titan too and I'd like to kick the engineer who decided to put the filter there. Do I need to take the plate off or just try to squeeze my hand through?

Thanks,

Do yourself a favor and take the whole skid plate off. I tried just going through the little door and I couldn't get leverage on the filter. That sob was on there super tight. Even the socket I had for it slipped before the filter moved. I finally had to use a squeeze type and brace myself against one of the tires.

I had to hammer a screwdriver through mine twice just to get it loose enough to twist off with my hand. Which, by the way, spilled enough oil to make a pretty good mess on the driveway. Which, the old lady wasn't too happy about.
