20x10 Rims too big for Titan?

Talked to a couple of guys at Discount Tire today about ordering the Helo Maxx 20x10 rims for my Titan with Nitto 305-55-R20 tires. He said the rim is too big for the Titan and that the tires would rub the shocks or struts.

I know alot of people have put these rims and tires on the Titan. I know there is a little rubbing on the fender wells, but that can be fixed. I have never heard of the tires rubbing against the shocks or struts.

Has anyone else had this problem?

He also said with the tire combination the tires would stick out almost 2". Is there another tire size that would fit better? It has the prerunners front leveling kit.

Help!

They would be fine if you have the correct offset. You will have some tire rub without a level kit or lift or modifying the tire well with a heat gun. Your main concern should be rubbing the brake calipers, then how much offset to stop them from sticking out the sides. I'd call their 800 number and ask the techs there for the correct offset. They seem to know more than the guys at the shop.

Remember that the drive-line geometry will be altered and more stress will be placed on the drive-line when you order the super-sized donuts.

Given the rear diff issues of stock trucks you may want to rethink it unless you are ready for the risks and the warranty issues.

Do I need to be more concerned with 20" rim number or the 10" wide number for the rims.

Nissan sells Titans with custom 20" rims. Why should these 20s affect the warranty and/or differential.

Remember you are dealin with a girl here. Thanks.

Niether, the offset. This is how deep the center of the rim is in relation to the edges. If you have no offset, the center will be centered halfway from front to back. If as you add or subtract offset, the rim will move closer in or stick more out from the truck. 20" is meaningless. The outer diameter of the tire is all that matters. Also, 10" is pretty much meaningless as you can always have the rim stick out more. I have 305-55-20 tires on mine so they will fit. I needed to use a heat gun to melt the inner fender well slightly to stop rubbing. Took 2 minutes and looks stock. They can do this for you. What you need to worry about is how close in or how far out the tire sticks from the truck. Too far in and you will rub. Too far out and it will look funny and spray rocks/etc. on the side of the truck. Also, you need to make sure the design of the rim doesn't rub on the brake calipers. Like I posted earlier, don't worry about them fitting. They will. You just need to make sure you have the correct offset and that they won't rub the brake calipers. Plenty of people have 20x10 by the way also. Contact the back office and ask them what offset you need for that rim to fit a Titan. If you don't want to have the heat gun treatment, just get 305-50-20 and you will be fine. They will be about 1" shorter, and the truck will be 1/2" lower, that's all.

The dealer has informed me that the Helo Maxx has a negative 12mm offset. Will this work?

Stock is +18mm. A minus 12 would mean it would be 1 1/4" different. This would mean the rims would stick 1 1/2" out more than stock, which doesn't seem correct to me. For a 9.5" rim, you want a + offset of 10-20mm. It should be similar for a 10" rim. It looks like he is trying to make the back be exactly where the stock rim sits and have all the extra stick out. This would not be correct. The inside?back of the tire doesn't rub. the outer edge rubs the tire well at 45 degree turns. By sticking it out that much, I will rub more, not less. That dealer has no clue. Call the national rep, get the correct specs, and tell the dealer what to do. Don't leava it to them. My discount tire guy tried to fit the wrong offset on mine also the first time until he called the national line. You want more like a +15mm offset.

I appreciate everyone's input. 92TripleBlack, thank you for all your input.

I don't mean to sound ignorant or redundant with these questions. I'm just trying to do my homework before I make a decision.

I called the 800 for discount tire and they said all of their reps were out in the field so they transfered me to the Jacksonville, FL office where the rep was. They told me the Helo Maxx 20x10 has the - 12 offset.

They also said that I need to go to a 9" rim instead of 10".

I put about 20K+ miles on my Titan a year. If the gas mileage would drop to 9mpg it would be cutting the gas mileage by 30% and at $3/gallon it adds up. I'm glad to hear that someone else is getting the normal 16 hwy mpg. In town I only get 12-13mpg.

Gas mileage will change very little, if at all. Like above, I'm getting around 16 with my 305/55/20s, about the same as stock.....don't worry about that.

What is the rolling height of the 305/55/20? Is the spedo going to be off by much? How much added stress on the driveline would you really be adding with the heavier/larger rims?

There is some real good information here: Rubbing and Heat Guns- fit those big tires!

Speedo will off about 1mph (you will going 1mph faster than indicated). As far as driveline stress....everybody's got their opinion, but with only that size...zippo! The overall diameter change is only about 1 inch and unless you buy solid concrete rims you should be fine as far as weight goes. Performance will suffer some though.
