Auto 4wheel Selection

My neighbor just bought a truck it is 4x4 but in addition to the 2Hi, 4Hi, 4Lo he has a setting for Auto-4x4.

How does this Auto-4x4 setting work and what are the advantages?

I have a couple of AWD vehicles now and have owned a few others in the past. These have a viscous coupling in the middle and monitor wheel spin and then shift a variable amount of power to the rear diff. But the vehicles are not what I would refer to as serious 4wheel as they do not have the 4Lo setting and one cannot really put then in continuous 4wheel drive unless one cheats the system by putting different size tires etc.

I like the idea of the truck automatically putting itself in 4x4 mode upon the detection of slippery conditions.

I wish the Titans had this too. We may as well as long as we don't have a mechanical transfer case lever. The Armadas have an auto4x mode I think. Don't know how different the transfer cases are.

Hey you are right on, I had not thought of the fact that we don't have to throw a lever like the good ole days.

Wonder if there is away to upgrade our system to armada level with some engineering help from the experts!

You got me thinking along the line of a software fix.

ABLS detects slip or the VDC detects slip,
switches into 4x4 4Hi to assist the control process!

Way cool any takes on getting this into an operable kit?
