Snow chains

Does anyone recommend a good brand of snow chains? I plan to take a road trip in Jan out to Colorado, Utah, California. I am debating on towing my travel trailer. I know that snow chains are mandatory under certain conditions. I am not interested in buying snow tires since I live in Texas. I have a 4x4 w/ P285/70R17 stock tires.

You'll only need to have chains on your trailer if you already have a 4x4. In CA, if the highway you're traveling on requires chains on a 4x4, then you DEFINITELY don't want to be out in the road anyway. That's when it's too treacherous to be driving (too windy, visibility is near or at zero, too much snow on the ground, etc.). If you have a trailer, the CHP definitely won't let you through with chains on your truck or not - if chains are required on 4x4.

Totally agree with Kvoman,

Chains also tend to flop and given the delicate nature of the Titan body work it may cause major damage. At most those modernized plastic thingies would be all that I would risk using on the titan.

Trailer with wind, snow and slick roads will be a huge challenge.

For travel the 4x4 should be plenty. Remember the sand at the side of the road when wet flows and wont support weight (quick sand like).

Different perspective on chains

I have chains for my 4x4.

Best use for me is in wet/slushy conditions with temperatures dropping and the goo sticking to your stock tires...in Michigan when I visit, that's real concern when the sun goes down!

20 mph maximum. Get tensioners to keep the chains from rattling around.

I agree that if conditions are that bad, pulling over is a good option. In snowy conditions, 4x4 should be fine.

If you're not planning on a lot of use for the chains and since you're towing a trailer, I would recommend the cable chains. $59.95 a set. You would want two sets.

As for your trailer, I assume you have a brake controller installed as well? That's a must.

On I-70 in the mountains of Colorado, you will be stuck behind alot of people driving 2WD w/crappy tires long before you will ever need chains in a 4x4 with A/T tires. A full tank of gas, tunes & snacks are key.
