Pulled over for no front plate this morning

I got pulled over for not having my plate attached to my skid plate. Turns out in Illinois they updated the law (as of 1/1/2006) that this will become a points issue and must be rectified.

Now, when I bought the truck, the dealer drilled two holes in my skid plate and attached the license bracket, frame and plate. That setup lasted until the first time I went off-road. I had to backtrack 10 miles to find the spot where it was ripped off the plate. That left two nice holes slightly larger than the original ones.

Okay, I went and bought some larger bolts and replaced the stupid thing. That lasted until the first time I drove through a snow bank and left it behind. I never did go back and find that one. I simply went to the DMV and got a replacement which I have yet to figure out how to mount without using bolts large enough to hold a house down in a tornado.

Annyone have any good suggestions. I am thinking of trying cable ties next along with lag bolts.

Wow, so now youre saying that in IL a no front license plate is a moving violation and not just a fix it ticket? Im confused

Screw em...

I've had my truck for close to 2 years. My front plate bracket lasted until I got home from the dealership. It AND the rear plate frame were immidiately 87'ed. To this day I still don't run plates. I have the original temp reg sticker in my front window and keep my license plate in the pocket on the back of the driver seat.

I repossess stuff and don't need ****heads writing down my plate number.

It's nice to live in a state that dosn't require front tags. I always disliked they way they looked on the front of vehicles.

In California, we required to have front license plate. I have been driving for more than 15 yrs and many cars without front license plate and never got pull over (knock on wood).

Just throw it in on the dash. The Colorado police told me that as long as it's visable you are in the clear.

What's there to be confused about? No front plate is now a moving violation (which I am sure I said).

The problem I see is how are they going to enforce it on vehicles like Vipers and Corvettes which clearly don't have any place to mount one. I am sure there are other vehicles out there like those as well.

corvettes do have a place for a front plate.. I had mine on for about a day and it look terrible..

I think front plates on cars are the dumbest thing.. I haven't had a front plate on my car in about 4 years...and nothing.....

my girlfriend is a cop for the Naperville Police, and according to her (She could be wrong, but i doubt it), the front licence plate will always be a equipment violation, something that is part the car (ie. bumper height, tailights functions, etc..). A moving violation is defined as something done while driving (speeding, DUI, etc) so it would seem highly unlikely that the law would switch because it doesn't make sense. You CAN still be pulled over for an equipment violation, but in terms of points, IL is a non point state. Hopefully this helps....

Exactly, thats what I thought. Just a fix it violation and fine. If my insurance company tried to jack up my rates from a no front license plate "moving violation" I would be BEYOND pissed off.

Mount your plate behind the black plastic grill in the lower grill opening. That way it wont rip off, and in theory you would be legal. Just a thought. I live dangerously I guess... I could get multiple tickets should an officer here if the lovely state of CA feel like it.

In states that require front and rear plates, what is the reason? In MS Delta the plates we put on the front read Cotton, Rice, and John Deere, ha ha.
