Breaking Nissan News

From AutoNews.com

NASHVILLE -- Nissan North America Inc. has scheduled a press conference at the state capitol building here on Thursday.

The company won't comment, but the subject is believed to be whether Nissan will move its headquarters from Gardena, Calif., to Tennessee.

The automaker won't comment on the subject until it meets with employees, spokesman Fred Standish said Thursday morning. A meeting with employees was scheduled for Thursday.

The proposed relocation has generated much internal turmoil at Nissan over the past two months.

Nissan Motor Co. CEO Carlos Ghosn heard final arguments for and against the move at the company's regular monthly business meeting in Hilton Head, S.C., this week.

Nissan has about 1,300 employees in Gardena, most of them in sales and marketing.

Ghosn cited lower real estate and business taxes as major reasons for the move.

"The costs of doing business in Southern California are much higher than the costs of doing business in Tennessee."

Nissan will save money by moving to Tennessee, which has lower costs for property, utilities and taxes.
Not to mention either that salaries for the people of the south are probably a lot lower. Seems like a good business sense move to me.

That's certainly good news for the people in Tennessee.
Also pretty good business sense for Nissan as they already have two Mfg. Plants in Tennessee as well.

Lower taxes,lower costs.

Well, that is bad news for CA,but good news for Tenn.I feel for the folks in CA;it is rough to suddenly lose your job.
It probably won't be a tough choice for Nissan;everything is cheaper in Tenn, and they are much closer to the production facilities in Canton Miss, and the engine plant inTenn.Nashville is maybe 250-300 interstate miles from Canton-4 hrs driving time.Glad that Nissan is keeping-building plants in the USA.We really don't need to lose anymore manufacturing jobs.
The Japanese manu.with plants in the USA have a huge advantage over the Big 3 in that all their plants were built in non union states. This makes their labor-medical-pension cost much, much less than GM etc.Honda has built facilities in Canada, citing labor force education issues, but the fact that Canada has universal health care was a big draw. They have ZERO health care costs.
Oh well, glad Nissan is building in the USA.Charlie

Yeah, plus they have the Smyrna plant right up the road. The new Nissan headquarters will be located in Brentwood,TN. Ironically, its where most of the Tennessee Titans live.

Even though I live just outside of Nashville,I still feel really bad for those people that will be out of a job (although some may transfer).I went through that several years ago, and its not easy.

I have some friends that work at the current HQ here in Torrance (Gardena), need to talk to them about what there gunna do. Nissan has 2 good sized buildings within a mile of each other by the 110/405 interchange. Alot of local dining places have been pushing for Nissan to stay because they thrive on the Nissan employees business.

O well, another big business leaves CA for cheaper rent, etc...guess that means more condos.

I think that this is good news for California. After all, this is what the people of California want and what we have voted for. Just this week the people of California voted to continue with the policies that led us to financial ruin.
We complain about high gas prices but will not allow refineries to be built. We have massive amounts of gas and oil off our coast, but have banned drilling. We complain that business is leaving the state, but continue to regulate and tax business so that have no choice but to pack up and leave.
We deserve no pity, we got exactly what we have asked for.
Oh, and one more thing. San Francisco just outlawed handguns. Not only can't you buy a handgun, you have to take the handguns you own and turn them in with no compensation. You have until April to turn in your handguns.Socialism is running rampant in this state.
