Brake Squeal when backing up?

Ok, I've read a couple of other threads on this subject, but may noise only happens when the truck has been sitting for a while and when I am backing up. I get the dreaded brake squeal in reverse without touching the brakes. When I touch the brakes it goes away, but will come back until I press harder or release. Once in drive, no problem. No squeal at all no matter how often the brakes are used. Anyone else have this? I've had the new brakes now for about 4 months and they have been great. This issue just started in the last few weeks. Looks like a trip back to the dealer for a check-up.

Re: Brake Squeal when backing up?

Same thing. Had new brakes for about four months. Just noticed it about a week ago. Been snowing and raining here and salt on the roads. May have something to do with it.

Re: Brake Squeal when backing up?

My wife's Sentra has done this every winter. I don't know about the Titan as it's my first year with it.

What you are hearing is the rust on the rotors. The wet roads / salt combination causes surface rust to form on them. When you back up, the back sides of the brake pads rub rust deposits ever so lightly yielding the squealing noise. If you drag the brake pedal ever so softly (while in reverse) as you back up, you should find that it will go away. As far as I know, there is no cure for this as a rotor is truely uncoated / untreated steel. I suppose if you were to use Stainless rotors that it my not happen.

Nothing to be concerned about in my book.

Re: Brake Squeal when backing up?

My brakes squeel slightly, when first moving in reverse as well. It only does it very briefly, then no more.

I thought it could be simply the rotors themselves. The car was last going forward when braking, now it's going in reverse, and maybe the rotors have some, I hate to sue this word but, tension in them because of the change of direction.

I'm not too worried at this point, simply because it's been doing it for about three weeks, and it hasn't gotten any worse.

BTW-We have no snow or salt on the ground here yet, and my truck is not sitting long enough to rust, so I don't think it's that at all, at least my the sound I'm hearing.
