Which radar detector to buy?

I currently have an old Bel probally about five or six years old and I have been getting a lot of annoying false alarms and will probally upgrade. Anybody have any info on what are some of the better detectors out thier? I don't want to overspend but I want a good detector.

2005 KC SE
Radiant Silver
Big Tow
Pop. with Captains
OEM Fogs, Bug Sheild

Re: Which radar detector to buy?

I am also interested in this topic. Are there any detectors out there that have the unit mount in the exterior of the vehicle (grill) and have a control panel that mounts to the interior of the vehicle?

Re: Which radar detector to buy?

I have a Valentine1 for the past 5 years and it's still as good today as the day I got it. A plus with the V1 is you can upgrade the software if new software is avaiable from Valentine. I have had BEL before in the past and usually get a good 2-3 years out of them.

If your'e looking for remote mount K40 have something and the BEL I had was like that, not sure if they still make them since I have not research radar detectors for the last 5 years.

Re: Which radar detector to buy?

www.valentineone.com is the best for under a Grand. They are only available from the maker.
The passport is a close second and $100 less.

Re: Which radar detector to buy?

I have been happy with my Passport 8500. I have had it a couple of years now. You can upgrade the Passport as well. I think what you will find is that the Valetine and Passport are the best on the market. Your choice will be between these.

Re: Which radar detector to buy?

I used a passport 8500 for the last few years and had very good luck with it. For the Titan I installed an Escort SRX. Has a remote radar antenna in the front with more range than the 8500 plus two laser shifters “jammers” in the front and one in the rear. The head unit mounts nicely in the dash. It’s funny watching the speed cops shoot and look at there laser gun, and shoot again. I guess it’s hard for them to understand no reading on something as big as a Titan. The unit is pricy but so are tickets.

Valentine1

I have owned 3 of them, Escort was good before Valentine broke away from the company J. Jager was his partner, but the technology left with Valentine.

You can add the laser jammers to the Valentine and get the best of both worlds. Jamming laser is legal You are making light. Same as turning on your headlights. Jamming radar isn't. You need a broadcasting license for that.

Re: Which radar detector to buy?

The SRX doesn’t jam radar it just blinds the laser. Escort only has dealers install them but you can purchase on Ebay and do your own install. I didn’t hook it up on mine but it has a voice notification setting rather than the beeping.

Correct. I only added the radar jamming answer as a preemptive statement.
BTW, the Escort SR7 basically doubles the price.

Re: Which radar detector to buy?

another vote for the val 1 here.

Only time i've had a real problem with falses on it was heading west, from Denver through Steamboat Springs, through Vernal, Utah across to about Ely, Nevada about every half hour it would get a strong radar burst from the east
never did work out what was causing it.

Funny that you're from Hillsboro wdavidsharp - I spent a month there on the silage harvest this year. Worked mainly between Itasca and Hillsboro.
