Mirror thermometer shows "ICE"

Now that the cold weather is here again, I notice that when the mirror temp shows about 36 degrees the readout will alternate with "ICE" at times. This only happens around 36 degrees. If the temp reads 32 for example, it will not flash "ICE". Any idea about why they engineered it this way?

Re: Mirror thermometer shows "ICE"

Bridges and overpasses may ice over at about 36 degrees air temp. That is why they have the ice warning come on at that temp.

Re: Mirror thermometer shows "ICE"

It only does that a few times around the 37 degree mark probably for the reasons already mentioned. If I pull out of the heated garage it will do that as the temp display goes down to that temp. Once past 36 or 37 degrees it stops. It's just a warning because if it waited until it was actually reading 32 degrees, it may be too late...you may have already found out the hard way that there was icy conditions.

Re: Mirror thermometer shows "ICE"

I think it's why your 2 foot step ladder is full of warnings, etc. - Because there could be a shred of an ice crystal on the road and you could slip on it and sue Nissan, they want to warn you.

I'm in Oregon too and I haven't seen the 'ice' warning turn off for a couple weeks... kind or rare to have so much cold, dry weather around here..... I am hoping for some snow around Christmas

Re: Mirror thermometer shows "ICE"

I don't think its only the temp that sets it to ICE, I have noticed it at all temps (36 and below) when it was 3 degrees the other day it was flashing ICE, interestingly enough it was very slick on the roads.

I was thinking that maybe its tied into VDC and when there is a slip and its below 40.

Re: Mirror thermometer shows "ICE"

It only shows "ICE" after initial startup, then goes away. It is letting you know that the temp is right for icy conditions, before you start driving. FWIW, mine is an '04

Re: Mirror thermometer shows "ICE"

There could be a difference between 04's and 05's. My 05 shows ICE all of the time when it's close to or below freezing. The temp was between 3 and 8 deg F for my 25 minute commute this morning, and ICE was lit up the whole time.

The wife's minivan shows ICE for a period of time and then disappears much like others have described in their 04's.

Re: Mirror thermometer shows "ICE"

The 05s have the temp in the overhead and have an icon dedicated to the ice warning. The 04s with the mirror temp don't have room for both, so it just flashes and then stops.

Re: Mirror thermometer shows "ICE"

My '04 shows ICE as the temperature gets to 36 and will continue to display until it gets to about 32. It does this not only during start up but as I am driving throughout the day.
