Possible Axle Wrap / Need advise?

OK, There has been a lot threads about Axle Wrap but no one really describes what it feels like. In fact I started a thread last February but I never asked what it felt like.

It's kind of hard to describe what I'm feeling, but here goes...

I'm getting a vibration coming from the back end when I start from a complete stop. Not a twisting but more of a vibration. I'm not punching it, just easing the gas. It's not an overpowering vibration, sometimes slight other times, "yeah, there's a vibration." Occasionally I've felt a slight vibration rolling to a stop too, not sure if that's the same issue. I'm not sure what it is and I'm hopping some of you have felt it too and were able to fix it. I'm also hopping it's not the beginning of my rear dif. going out.

If it is axle wrap, would the traction bars fix the problem?

Help,
DJ

Sounds like it to me. Actually I just took mine off a couple of days ago and coinciding with removal I noticed’sponginess’ when accelerating from a stop and a slight shudder (not unlike the old Ford PSD would do after it beat on the torque converter for 60k or so). Funny thing is I never noticed it when the I had the helper springs on going forward, I did occasionally notice a vibration or shudder in reverse but the helper springs would do almost nothing to prevent wrap while in reverse. The timing of this post was great because I wasn't even thinking about axle wrap and I was thinking I may be one of the very few who have had a bad tranny. Cool... I can sleep tonight rather than obsess...

Re: Possible Axle Wrap / Need advise?

I just read your signature, with a lift like that and comparitavely light (it's no one ton stack of springs), long springs, he** yes! Traction bars!

Re: Possible Axle Wrap / Need advise?

Hey guys....thats not axle wrap.

What you are feeling is vibration caused from incorrect driveline angles as a result of your lift.

Axle wrap feels like your pinion is standing up on end when you hit the "go" pedal. In other words it will feel like the rear end of the truck is "raising" up on hard acceleration then go back down

I've just described what it feels like.....this is what it looks like:

Traction bars keep your rear end planted...it will do nothing for your vibrations

That sucks, Looks like I'm heading back to the installers.

What's a fix for that?

Thanks Bear Hunter

Shims - to correct the angle of the axle/driveshaft.

Re: Possible Axle Wrap / Need advise?

Have them check the angle of your driveshaft...they will need to adjust your carrier bearing. If I remember correctly..it's more involved doing it to a Titan....there was an old post I remember reading on here about someone getting a Procomp kit for the Titan and doing it.

If money is no object... High Angle Driveshafts are the way to go..say good bye to vibrations forever. Jesse can make one for your truck

Damn this sucks, money is an object.

Plenty of people have put on Pro Comp lifts why would this one change my driveline angle so much?

Sorry I needed to vent a little. I planned on getting the Fox coilovers from Greg. maybe I can get a little advise too.

Re: Possible Axle Wrap / Need advise?

Hey the Procomp Carrier Bearing drop kit is cheap...I'm not sayin you need a high angle driveshaft. When I say that I thought it was more involved with a Titan, it was because I thought I remembered that there was some cutting and welding involved because of the way the kit was designed for your truck....but I could be wrong...I don't have a Titan. Just tryin to help you out.

Do this...ask the guys who installed your lift if they dropped the carrier bearing... tell them you are getting vibrations and to check the angle again. Test drive it after they make the adjustment to make sure your happy...get it up to speed too and make sure you don't have any high speed vibrations (70mph)

Getting advise and input from others is the reason for forums like this.

Thanks for the advise, I was just venting a little, not at you. I am glad no one is saying it might be the rear dif.

BTW- I just saw the shots of your son (is it your son?) trying to get into your truck...very funny.

Re: Possible Axle Wrap / Need advise?

Titanic, that would be great but you dont have a carrier bearing, only the 2wd titans do. I would check the transmission bolts first, Ive seen ALOT of them loose and the new angle of the drivehaft can cause the trans to want to "lift" slightly (until the slip yoke starts to slide) under acceleration. Yes, traction bars will alleviate this from happening, but this shouldnt be an issue to begin with. I use the 3" pc blocks all the time and have no problems. Funny you found that on Desertrides.com, one of my old stomping grounds.

Thanks Greg, That's good news. I'll get back to you on the other things that I PM-ed you later.
