Yeah you are right Toxman. Well close, I'm on the 3rd diff You gotta play more stupid than they do.
When it went in the second time, I didn't even tell them it was the second failure, that was kinda fun when they found out themselves. I plan on doing the same when the third one goes. (that's if this new design 4 pinion turns out to be crap), Once the fourth goes I'll be getting my money from them for the tru-trac under the lemon law. Unless they want to buy back my low mileage truck.
I'm thinking they might take a real beating on a buy-back. I've seen trucks advertised for 10,000 dollars less than 1.5 years ago when gas was 'cheap'.
Really amazing, The 34,000 Ram that I couldn't touch, with all the goodies I wanted, is now 24,000 dollars.
(No I'm not getting a Dodge, I like my truck and everything is gonna be just fine)
everyone knows you want a hemi and you keep pulling a 15,000 lb camper with your titan so you get one

I have a 2004 Titan LE 4x4 and just turned over 50,000 miles. I bought it new in April of 04 and love this truck. However, I tow several trailers (Boat – Utility – Race Car) and have concern about the Rear Differential Failures that have occurred.
The race car trailer with the car – extra wheels/tires, has a tow weight of about 8,000 lbs. I always tow with the Tow Mode switch on, and over drive off.
Additionally, we drive on some gravel lake roads that it is better to use 4 wheel drive. I probably have over 2500 miles in 4 wheel drive on the truck.
Regarding the Differential Failures, are there any early signs that I should be watching for?
I Don't Have The Utility Track. I Need Some Help. They Replaced My Rear Differential And I Still Have The Noise. I'm Taking My Truck To Another Dealer For A Second Opinion.
I have a 2006 Titan SE Crew Cab with Tow Package and I have taken my truck in for sort of the same reason (it feels like i am towing a trailer where the ball is too small and when i take off i feel a thud and then when i brake i feel a thud not loud but enough to where i feel it in on the floor board, and i have a whining sound coming from the rear as well only when i am going up hills (?) ) they told me that it is the leaf springs they checked everything out but found nothing wrong with the differential. I have had plenty of trucks in my life and this is the first time that the leaf springs have ever made this sound.
I brought the truck in that day and they had it fixed by mid day Thursday. The dealership gave me a free minivan through Enterprise.
Basically, they replaced the complete axle and Diff. I think the invoice for the repair was over $3,000. Of course, it was all under warrantee and completely FREE!!

Great Job Everyone and thanks guys for filing with NHTSA. It's the only action that will do any good for the diff.
When I clicked on, it took me to the 1st page from way back when. I thought I was on the recent page and reading the number of reports (about 9) I was a little confused and a lot disgusted
Not sure the exact number of complaints now, but hopefully it's close to getting some action
If you know how to pull the number of failures by year from NHSTA, will you post it here?
Also, a co-worker with an 04' Titan (4x4, no BT or OR, never towed with) had a leak out of bottom of his cover. He looked at the axle ends/brakes and had fluid everywhere. The dealer replaced the axles and I assume the rear end is part of the axle assembly. He was less than 5K from his warranty running out.
Attached is the latest failure log. If you have question marks (especially mileage) next to your failure, please reply with the information and I will add it.
It looks like things are moving along slow but steady. I hope people continue to file. Even if we continue at an average of 5 per month, it would be great!!!!!
my rear diff was replaced last march or april, I can't remember. I would hear a clunk from the rear end whenever I would shift from reverse to drive, kind of like if a u-joint was going out. I would also hear a low pitch whine at slow speeds (very slow like 1-2 mph and only when turning.) It kind of sounded like the rear brakes were catching. Anyhow, I took it to the dealer and voiced my concernes. He also told me that the noise was the brake pads, but when i called him back in the afternoon, he told me the diff was going out, and it was on back order. Three weeks later, I finally got my truck back. Now the "bad u-joint noise" never really went away, if anything it was lessend (is that even a word?) but now it is more pronounced. I just now reported the initial replacedment (complaint #10167333.) My truck had about 12k miles on the original 'failure.' I am going to take it back to the dealership probably this coming week. I want to buy an extended warranty first becuase my local dealership won't give me a rental unless I have one.
My truck is an 05 4x4 with bt and the locker. I use the truck to tow about 8-10 times a year. The most I tow is a 24ft travel trailer that I figure weighs about 6klbs loaded. I do tow is some hilly terrain (about a 4000' climb with what I think are 6% grades.) No VDC.
