I just filed a complaint with NHTSA for the rear Axle Shaft seal leakage. They just replaced seals and other hardware, not the whole rear end. This happened a couple of months ago. I'm not sure who is logging this stuff but if you PM me I can fill in the blanks.
I think it's a great idea to report this, I just purchased a 2006 and hopefully won't have to deal with the problem. But, any idea which rears are having the most trouble, in which trucks? 4x2, 4x4, tow package, locking rear, off road package? All those things cause different effects on the diff, tire size, ride stature etc. etc. just curious if it was any one certain type that was going?
OK. So my truck now has 45,000 miles. I have an '04 with Big Tow, Off-Road and e-lock. I occasionally pull my pop up camper a few times a year. So far so good and no problems.
But... Can I expect that my diff will eventually blow?
PRJ--have you had your diff fluid changed? Also, if you want to help out, reply with your rear diff part number (white sticker in my previous reply) and we can see if it matches any of those that have blown.

I have changed it twice already. Put the 75 w 140 synthetic in. The paint on my cover has peeled - from heat I assume. But everything still seems to be in working order.
I'll need to crawl under their and get the part number. It was an August '04 build.
Filled out the the form last night, after I was told by the dealer that the high pitch whine coming from the rear end was the differental. They took it apart and saw metal fragments in the housing. They have ordered a new diff, will be in around 3 to 5 days. I will wait and see. I had a gut feeling it was on its way out. The high pitch whine was really stating to annoy me to no end. Lets hope it will be fixed right .
Just had mine replaced...
52,500 miles
2005 SE 4x4 w/ big tow
never towed anything, had brake issues and had them replaced twice (once on this service as well)
most I have done is pulled a holly bush out of the ground after I loosened it
I drive 95% highway
Reported problem to delaer @ 30k service and told all was OK. During this service requesting fluid change, metal bits were observed and differential was replaced no questions asked.
Initial reported problem was a felt jerk during deceleration and acceleration. As time went along I noticed a louder than normal noise coming from the rear during cruising, it went away when foot was off the accelorator so I wasn't sure if it was exhaust system breaking down (like muffler was loosing it's sound deadening ability) or the rear end.
Had the diff fluid replaced once before this requested service.
