It finally happened at about 9500 miles (I bought the truck new late last summer).
Took my 05 Crew Cab? (4 full sized doors), 4x4, off road, E lock, Big Tow in because they just did the brake recall (did new front rotors and pads and new rear pads and resurfaced rotors) and it was making a clicking noise when I hit the brakes.
They call me back and say it's the rear end and will have one in at the end of the week. Service mgr says he's seen one other in the 14 months he's been there.
Also they had to replace the aux fan. He said it was a recall on the 06's.
I tow about 3500 pounds 30 to 70 miles about 3 times per month.
From what I've gathered from this lengthy thread, it doesn't sound like my new rear end will be any better than what I've got, is that right???
My rear axle started whining and gas mileage going down and the pass side seal just started leaking. The dealer is replacing it under warranty. I have submitted a case to the NHTSA #10195992

That makes sense. All the diffs they are putting on my truck are dated 10-06 but your new truck is a date close to your build date on your truck. They must be getting rid of the old problem diffs hoping some will work not caring about the customer. Something is starting to smell here.
The new diff I had intalled in my truck has a date on it of 10-06 also.Does this mean I got the same diff that was replaced? Thanks.
Skeet--what was your part number prior to the current one? (43001-7s37B?--I only show you having one failure)
I wish someone with an 08' would reply with their part number as I believe they have a different part number again.

Yeah only one failure I just got to thinking and wanted to know if I had one of the (supposed to be) newer rear ends or if it was replaced with the same thing it originally had.I don't know where these numbers like (43001-7s37B) are coming from because I don't have anything like those numbers on my diff. The paper work I got from the dealer ( which I don't have any more) must be where these #s are coming from.
My'06 has had 3 rear axel seal failures in 25,000 miles and now getting the whole rear end being replaced. Last week, at little over 25,000 miles, oil started leaking where the driveshaft goes into the differential housing. The tech also confirmed that there was whine heard from the rear end during his test drive. Funny things is, I was already hearing the whine not too long after I bought this Titan... I had brought it to my service writer's attention before, but his techs could never confirm it. Bright side is, I may end up with better working parking brake based on what I read recently on this forum.

Nissan has now refused to honor their warranty. My last differential went out at 59 k and now at 67 k, the new one is whinning and has a lot of play in it. Nissan will not even talk to me even though the new rear end has a 12k or 1 year warranty. Baker-Jackson South in Houston is worthless. They sell trucks but service has now become a thing of the past. New service manager and he will not even call and tell me why they don't pressure Nissan to fix my problem. I have purchased 3 Nissans from Baker-Jackson Nissan in the last 7 years. Guess customer loyalty does not exist there. Anyone with a 04 through 07 Titan should know your chances of having a diff failure is pretty good.
Having said that, I am looking for someone in the Houston-Conroe area that can install a Tru-Trac diff in my truck. I have a 2wd , 04, BT. I am not going to wait for this thing to fall apart.

I had the right rear axle seal replaced at 29,000 miles, said then that diff. "clunked" shifting from rev to drive (or vice versa), they changed the diff oil. After telling them that it made no change, they ordered a whole new rear end to be replaced Friday. Sounds like only my springs and wheels are going back on the rear.... (also changing the fuel sensor while they have the axle out) It should improve my parking brake as well. All under warranty... Not bad when you consider I didn't buy it from them in the first place... But I will next time!

I think what we are seeing is Nissans choice. My Xterra is sitting while legal action proceeds. There choice is, deny the design flaws, blame the customer and destroy the market.
They could have chosen to.......stop the assembly lines, determine the partys that allowed this to happen, assure no more exploding diffs are installed, take care of customers through warranty or recall, and preserve there blossoming truck market.
After 2 new Nissans in a row I know I am done, and trying my best to cost them thousands of additional sales. Both choices are expensive....I wonder which would have been better...hmmmmm.
and now at 67 k, the new one is whinning and has a lot of play in it. . . . . .install a Tru-Trac diff in my truck.
Tru-Trac replaces the oem carrier and spiders. It does not replace oem ring gear & pinion. If you have ring/pinion wear causing the whining, just a Tru-Trac install will not solve that problem.
What are the symptoms of the diff. failing? Or does it just go kaplooey at once? I have a 2005 that I bought last month with 28,000 miles, and I can feel a little clunk or slippage or something when I take off from a stop at normal driving. Could this be related to this, or is it something else I'm feeling, like the tranny engaging or the springs dipping? Or maybe the box shifting from all of that raw power I have never owned a Titan, this is my first. Maybe I should take it to the dealer and have somebody drive it.

Regardless if it is the rear diff or not, I'd take it in. As for the symptoms, many like myself had fluid leakage around the axle seals or at the driveshaft and/or noises from the rear. Take a look at the 4th photo in this thread (the thread topic is totally unrelated) and you'll see an example of leaking axle seals:
Nov 16, 1996, UGA at Auburn, 1st quarter: UGA V almost takes Auburn wide receiver Rober Baker's manhood off for catching a touchdown pass to put Auburn up 7-0. Stupid leash.
