Damn, I gotta '04 XE 4x4 that just started leaking from the rear end seals. With only 38080 miles, that wasshocking to see. I have a date with the service department that said its still good under warranty (keeping my fingers crossed). What even more strange is that its happening on one side, I guess thats a good thing.

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported To NHSTA
I sent mine in today. I got a qoute from the dealer of $754 to replace the seals and another $100 to replace diff fluid. F... that ill do it myself. This should be recalled if it gets on your brakes it wont be pretty when you go to stop.

Starting last Friday when I would lightly accelerate while turning it would feel like the rear was locked (scrubbing inside the tire and lots under steer) then it would bang or pop real loud and feel like it would unlock. Took it into the dealership on Monday they said the rear axle would be replaced under warranty. They they had the rear axle overnighted and was done by late the next day (Tuesday). Guess we will see how long this lasts.

07 2WD LE with Big Tow package, 20,000 miles. I pull a 18 foot bass boat, (you don't even know it's behind the truck!). I liked the truck until I was pulling the boat home today and my rear end locked up in the middle of an interesction with boat in tow! After about 15 mins of folks cussing at me for blocking the intersection a nice man offered to help me off the road to the shoulder so I could safely unhook my boat. The Nissan dealer had a roll back on site in about 45 mins, not bad. I thought the transmission had gone out, no clunking, whining gears etc.. before she gave out, just a clunk and bam total failure. I slid her in neutral thinking it was the transmission and when he went to pull me we figured out real quick my rear tires were LOCKED UP! I ruined two new Bridestone Revo AT's getting to saftey with the boat. Not like I had a choice, I had to get the boat and truck out of the middle of a intersection of an intersate on and off ramp and a 4 lane road. I have asked Nissan to replace those two tires. Firestone says rear end locking up in the middle of the road is not a tire "road hazard".
I had 4/32's left on the stock Conti's when I swapped them out at about 19,000 miles. Better safe than sorry!
I found out real quick my extended warranty rental only gives me a "like vehicle" IE a truck you cannot tow with!!! Thank goodness for a dealer that bent over backwards to get me a commercial Ford F250 until he can get me back on the road. I know the u joints had to take a beating getting drug off the road. The transmission did not sound good at all when I put her in neutral. Since it's sealed, I bet they check the fluid and if it looks ok put it back on the road?
Things break, I understand that. I checked this page 1.5 years ago when I switched from Toyota to Nissan and it seemed like this problem was gone in 06. Now I have a truck that I am so far upside down in I can't see a way out (like most truck owners out there today) and I really don't trust the truck since I cannot find an answer to "what is THE ROOT CAUSE of this friggen problem! " My dealer freely admits he has changed a "few" noisy rear ends, I am the first stranded failure. He drives an 06 Titan himself!
I can just see me being 200 miles from home, boat in tow, breaking down, and them sending me a truck with no reciver, no lights, etc.. to get back on the road with. BTW, yes I have the best 100K mile ext warranty offered, after today I'd say save your money. If it was not for my service manager I'd be driving something with no chance of pulling my boat the rest of the week I have off. UGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully I'll learn to trust my Titan again one day, it'll be a while after reading now 30 pages of rear end problem reports.

Rant over
Truetrac brutha! My 04 RE was replaced with an 05 in June of 05.. Hopefully they didnt bolt up an 08 RE on your Tinan. If so TT isnt an option anymore. TT replaces the week stuff in the Titan Diff and gives you another avenue of fun. Good luck. BTW, I tow a 19' boat and a 25' (7k) travel trailer.....

Thanks, for that tid bit of info. They mentioned me trading for an 08? I laughted and reminded them what my 07 was worth in today's market.
I have not had a call back yet on what they are going to do, I have an insider at Nissan HQ Customer Service. I sent them my NHTSA info and the info I posted here. Basically I was told they would do what they could. It's a crying shame to have such an otherwise great truck with this issue and have to go spend more money to make it work like it should have from day one.
I guess no TT for me when I run out of warranty. I went by the dealership yesterday and indeed they had an 08 rear end hanging. They told me the build date on my broken unit was Dec 06 BTW: Pinion gear let go basically destroyed everything inside was what the mechanic told me was the problem. They told me any rear end produced after April 07 will be the current "08" part number.
I about FELL OUT when the service manager (he has been very helpful) called the parts manager out to help him with the part numbers, dates, etc... and the parts manager came out the door talking about the "titan was not built to tow stuff anyway". GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I went looking for a replacement yesterday, indeed with all the HUGE rebates out there I could get out of the truck and finance sticker or less on a new one but that makes no sense when you look at what all trucks are worth right now. I'll just PRAY the "08" rear end holds up better. I have the 100K mile warranty and about half my miles are towing 3500 pounds. Love my Titan, no longer trust it to get me there.
Back on the road again, pretty fast turn around! Thanks for the vent tip, indeed they had forgot to remove the plastic plug and install it. Hopefully the 08 rear end will last 100K plus miles, I'll be puckering till then LOL.
I live about 15 miles from the Nissan Smyrna plant where they make the Titan and have several friends that work there. They say that Dana begged them to go with a larger differential, that the 44 was much too small.
Turns out that Nissan is now spending upwards to $1,000,000 per month (yes, that's one milliion) to repair the differentials under the drivetrain warranty.
Beancounters should NEVER be allowed to overrule engineers!

I concur..... However..... My good friend works at the Canton, MS plant and that is where the T, Armada, Qx56 are made. Smyrna is where the Frontier is made. Anyway, you are correct in saying the Nissan Dana "bastardized" rear diff is not sufficient for the T's torque... Shoulda been a Dana 60. that is why i have a detroit TT now.....

Sorry to hear. Another failure. I am worried about mine again. Its acting funny. I have already had both the front and rear axle replaced once.
