Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

So, what is the current status of the rear end situation? I just bought an 08, and now I am wondering if I will be regretting it. I got it for a great price, 35% off sticker, but still..... First post btw, so take it easy on me, show me some love

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

My two cents on the Titan. Nissan had the small and mid size trucks figured out, as did Toyo. Both made great smaller trucks for years. They see the running battle between F-150, Z-71, and Dodge and want to take over that market. So they put in that magic big V-8, and just kinda up scale their drive train a bit. Then when folks put em to the test in the real world, parts bend, fatique, and bust. The big 3 truck makers didn't get Farm Yard Tuff overnight, it was trial and error over years, constantly going bigger, more percise, and more or less heat treating till, the product will hold up to any farmer, hot rodder kid, or construction worker, the people who buy big trucks.
If Nissan wants to have the reputation with big trucks as they have with small trucks, they may have to go with a big Detroit locker or Dana 60.
My sis-in-law just bought a new 08 XE for $13,500, they already had a 07 XE for $19,000. They love them, but don't work them at all, just big smooth transpotation.

Happened to me yesterday...pissed

Yesterday I was heading out of town and thank goodness I was not far from a dealership and it sounding like the rear end was coming out of my truck (banging, jerking, popping) scared the s++t out of me. The truck is an 05 SE Big Tow loaded with 86K on it. The only heavy thing I have pulled once is the smallest skid steer loader. The mechanic could not believe I made it that far and that the whole rear end needed replacement; 3500.00 (3000.00 for the rear end) which I highly question. They wouldn't even work with me. I decided not to put the money in the truck and they gave me a deal I could not refuse on a 08 Pro4X Longbed loaded. I am still pissed. I do nothing but brag about the Titan and still love it, but I have to say it is not made to be a true work horse, although it does pull good I have just lost faith in the true "truckness" of it. Is the 08 any different?

The locker only comes with the "Off Road" package. Not all 4x4 Titans are "Off Road."

FYI...My truck is an '06. My original rear end failed at 3,000 miles (yes...they forgot the vent too and thanks to Titan Talk, I caught it...). It was replaced under warranty and I now have over 60,000 miles on the truck. The replacement rear end had a different part number than the original and has been fine so far.

Occassional towing (fairly heavy boats) and light 4 wheel driving...no "mud bogging" but some trailing and hauling stuff for the river house the family has on the St. Johns.

Oh...I do have a lead foot though.

No problems with the replacement.

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

My Titan joined the ranks last week with 69,960 miles and less than 10K after the SM replaced the left rear axle seal and differential fluid.
Nissan won't cover this under warranty so I ordered the TruTrac.
I'll be filing today.......

The TruTrac does not work with the e-locker or at least that is what I was told. Can anyone tell me different?

Mine bit the dust on Nov 8th at 83,000. Nissan Copr says htey hae never heard of the problem with the rearend. I say thats crap. Dealer wants $3900.00to fix it. I like my Titan, but the Tundra and the F250 /F350 look mighty sweet. Who knows.

TT replaces the E-loc. According to my vendor I ordered mine from it will fit with no issues and most of the units they sell are for Titans with E-loc.
I called Detroit and asked them and they said some axle shims may be needed but that's minor if true.
I'll know for sure soon....my truck has the E-loc and it's in a specialty shop now having TT installed.
Good luck!

TrueTrack was installed on my 05 Titan with no problems...and yes I had E-lock!
So far TrueTrac is excellent! I highly recommend it.

Hey Honeykeeper,

Did you have to have your ring and pinion gears replaced? I am having a hard time finding replacements. I was told I need them replaced also. One more thing. With the E-lock not hooked up, do you get any lights on your dash about a problem? The dealer said if I install the TT the truck will get error codes. Just wondering how you got around this. Thanks for the help.

Did they show you the damaged parts? They should if you ask them. That sounds fishy.
We replaced the front and back pinion bearings and races and the pinion seal due to having 70K on it. I did not have to replace the ring and pinion gears. Only the spider gears teeth were damaged.
No lights at all on the dash and no problems at all. TrueTrac is the best way to go in my opinion.
I have seen several used rear-ends/parts available on the forums. If you start a thread with what you are looking for I bet someone will contact you.
Did you file with the NHTSA yet?
Good luck and let us know what happens.
