hey Hkeeper!!! just joined the ranks yesterday after finding out the rear diff is blown! a week prior i was driving along when all of a sudden it sounded like i hit a friggin' anvil in the road, except there was nothing there. as the days went on a LOUD banging, popping kept occurring intermittently. after doing much visual inspecting and talking to some friends we figured its got to be the rear diff. so for fear of grenading the rear diff any more and having it lock up on me on the highway, decided to take it in. being that i maximized my warranty coverage when i bought her, i lucked out. so at 84,001 miles i too have become a victim and i don't even have the big tow package. while, at the dealership she's getting a new starter and flywheel assembly as well since the starter sounded like it was grinding something metal on start up. eventually will get trutrac and the 3.73 gears but that won't be for awhile so i'm happy a new rear is being put in rather than having my current one repaired.

Hello hooligan!,

Well hopefully someone will figure out how to put the TrueTrac in the new 08 rear......until you get the TT it's still open rear and that sucks/slips!
Is the flywheel warped on your new engine? WOW/HOW?! lol.
I'm loving my TT and knowing it won't break!
Take some pics. of your spider gears! Here's mine.
Good to hear from you amigo~!

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

Just picked up the truck, the write out on the service report says "no problem found" Doesn't seem to bother them that in 4lo with the difflock on I park the right side of the truck on ice and get stuck in the driveway with neither of the left side tires spinning or being given power. I think I'm going to have to personally grenade this rearend to get it fixed.

What's different about the 08 rear axle that makes it unable for a True Trac transplant?

ya, i know but hey, it's a new rear end! yee-haw! so the new rear will have a tru-trac and 3.73 gear transplant pretty soon. i've watched Bechlyf in the desert throw a dirt roost with both wheels so yeah, the tru-trac kicks @ss! plus i'll be able to finally fishtail when it gets wet!!!!

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

IIRC, the TT would only fit in the rear end of an '08 with custom work that as of now, only one shop has figured out. They also do not plan to make a kit available and will only do the work if you bring your truck in to them to have it custom fitted. For those who aren't able to get their truck into them may still be SOL, unless someone else figure out how the work was done.

Are you talking about the guy who went to Hooper's? They fabricated some parts to MAKE it fit in the '08. Wish I lived close enough to get it done. Maybe in September something'll pop up.

yes. no they didn't fab anything up, just machined the trutrac a bit more to make it fit w/o losing structural integrity. i'll be going to hoopers come tax return time.
