Decided to have Nissan replace the unit because of a lack of interest from local shops here in STL (parts availability). I told the stealership that I wanted the old unit back so I could have it rebuilt.
Waited a week for the new axle to come in. So the technician goes to take it apart and he finds that it wasn't the axle. Turns out that the Emergency brake pad had disintegrated inside of the drum it's in. The pieces would bunch up and then lock up the rear axle.
So not 100% sure how to feel about this. I'm happy that It only cost me 400 instead of 2500. Not so happy that the dipsh*t technician didn't diagnose the problem properly in the first place and caused me all this grief.
I'm also left wondering what would have happened if I wouldn't have asked for the old unit back. The tech could have just slapped the new rear end on there and I would have been none the wiser.
Went ahead and had the diff fluid changed since it was due. Trans fluid change + diff change + leaking trans cooler hose + ebrake fix == 917. My last car never cost me this much ugh!
I will tell you what. people are not looking at what they are doing, They never look into anything. I have a work vehicle (ford Taurus). It made a sqeeking creeking noise in the front. The dealer replaced the steering Rack. The noise was still there. SO what the heck is going on. you charge our company a part that did not need replaced. They just go in and start replacing what they want with no real examination into the problem.
The noise is still in the car. I believe its the strut bearings and sqeeky sway bar frame bushings. who knows!
Wow, my driver side axel is leaking now, what a pain in the ***. taking it to les scwabs, they will fix for $270 which is cheaper than the dealership who wants $400. schwabs warranty lasts for 3 years, vs 1 yr for the dealership. at 60900 and just missed the warranty. I'm thinking about selling this after a few years. The dealership replaced the passenger rear only 3k ago, at least that was covered. mines an '04 CC 4x4.
one more to add to the list!! mine went last Monday and no diff could be found anywhere in Canada!! So I was abit conserned when NISSAN was going to only sell me a new rear axial for a good guy price of $4000.00!!! Keep that....so a friend and mechanic suggested looking on the internet for the diff.
Well found the "true trac" @ west coast differential and Mark the sell's guy was great. Cost there was $635 plus shipping.
Now I hope to have the titan back on the road by the end of the week.
Just a side note...I had to replace the front driver side "c" clip...I had axial oil on the drive way last winter.
Just posted mine. Mine grenaded last July. Was at a gas station and put it into reverse and boom clunk. then it was 20 mph at 5000 rpm. Called Nissan dealer and they accused me of abusing the vehicle. Flipped out on them. Finally covered it under warranty but took them over a yr to pay the towing bill. Truck only had 45,000 on it when it went. Still looking for a rear end swap to replace Nissan Parts with better ones. Anyone know if you can put a dana axle under a nissan?

Lukemann I just had the same parking brake problem. My 04 has 60 000 on it and last week I was about 80 miles from anything and had to limp it to camp. When I took it apart I found the brake in about ten pieces the abs sensor and rotor were fubarred. Then I found the axle bearing was also done. I don't know if that is why the brake fell apart or if the heat from the brake caused the alxe bearing and seal to fail. Just waiting to get it into the shop to find out the total damage$.
Turns out my parking brake fell apart because the axle bearing was gone on the drivers side. When they took it apart found both bearings and seals are gone $1000 + cdn. Hopefully that is all of the damage.
You really think that they are replacing 2500 $ rear ends for a sensor problem? My dealer wouldn't even give me a rental until he pulled the cover off and saw the broken gears.
Dunno - my very first "brand new" pick-up was a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab (360ci). Started getting transmission light at about 90 miles. First visit to dealer - they scanned it, cleared the code, and drove around the block - no light. Sent me home, before I got home, light was back on. Called, they had me bring it in the next day. They replaced the whole transmission for what was a single sensor in the transmission itself.
Add a 2009 to this list. I went to the dealership today for some rear end whine and left after they ordered my a new rear diff. I will post again with the work is done.

WoW I have to say as much as I really like my truck and have had zero trouble, I have advised against anyone I know who plans on buying four wheel drive to consider a Titan.

Jesus Christ. Are we supposed to feel nervous every time we step on the gas? Why did Nissan make such a great truck but use such a heaping pile of **** for a rear end?
