You can get a PML cover that holds an extra quart. It sticks out a bit further, precluding use of the Helwig sway bar.

Some dealers have done the replacement for nothing. Sometimes it depends on what shape/what's happening with the cover/present fluid/noise etc. It varies from dealer to dealer from what I can tell.

If you did it yourself the cover is around 150, then you have to buy longer bolts, and a bracket for some line, maybe the E-Brake line. I don't know.

I had the whole '04 diff replaced under warranty with an '05 when my diff went.

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

i'll find out for sure tomarrow when the service department is open. but i'm pretty sure my differential failed this morning in my titan. i was actually headed to the dealer when it happened to get my wifes armada detailed that we bought last night. i heard 2 loud bangs and the truck lurched with each one and then then the truck wouldn't move. i was only a couple miles from the dealer so so 4hi got me there safely. i have a 04 titan le cc bt 4x4 or. rear dif cover replaced at 12k at the same time i had the brake fix done. this occured at just over 16k. i have also only towed a few times for relatively short distances my ski boat.

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

Sounds like a solid failure Brent,

And BTW sorry to everyone with the diff failure. It's happening so often that I think I've become desensitised to it. Mine happened around March '05 with only 3400 miles on and I wasn't really bummed out too bad. I didn't get any grief from my dealership and it was done in less than a week.

At this point and with this thread though, it's plain to see we have a problem on our hands that isn't going away.

Might as well. Here is the link. You can e-mail them and even call them toll free.

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

Now is this after towing or any towing at all that the rear end blows out? my uncle told me that they are way too small when the first one arrived at the dealer for sale. he told me that it would not hold up to that 9500 towing limit.

I don't tow, so will mine go out at some point? Should I get the Stillen cover with more capacity to reduce heat?

Hey Cheif!
Sorry for jumping in here late, but I'm curious. What did they replace with? Always cracks me up to hear how dealers "replaced" failed components. Replaced with what? Same part that will probably fail again?
I tow a 7000 lb TT about 4 weeks or so every year, and all I had was the baked rear diff lube back when it was factory. Since then I'm synthetic and have the aluminum cover, but if those rear ends are too small, I'm sure I'll have issues with it eventually.

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

I sure hope that most all of you guys with these failures are posting them on the NHTSA site.

It's very important for all of you to do this. So please take the time if you have not done so yet.

Those of you that have thanks a ton!!!!!

Deep.

05 2005 rear differentials reported

19 total.

Where are the rest of you guys?

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

Yeah...

What happened...It seems like there were like, 50 failures reported on here, within a month. But since then, not much. I have no doubt that people had failures, but it seems like all at once, no more failures-at least not being reported here?

BTW-19 is not that many. Of course, if it were my truck, I'd be singing a different tune!

No Problem Coach. I had an '04 truck, '04 rear. Checked the level at 1,000 miles and it was just a tad low. I topped it off. (conventional gear oi).

At 3,600 miles it crunched. The replaced it with an entire '05 rear. New axles and brakes included, standard practice. It has the finned aluminum cover and synthetic 90-140 oil. But nothing has changed as far as the innards. That's exactly my issue as well. There is a problem, I don't consider a fancy looking cover and the best lube money can buy to be a fix, not even by a longshot.

37L1, there is one more, but is an '06, incorrectly listed as an axle assembly failure.

Buzz, the only conclusion I can make is that some reports here may be just trolls. It's fun to post a failure here for them, but when push comes to shove, even they are not stupid enough to report a false failure to a Govt. Agency.

I'm not saying it's everyone, but quite a few have only had only a couple of posts, then seem to have dissapeared.

In any case it's far from a dead issue. In some cases rulings or decisions have been made to reimburse owners years after they have paid for repairs. Catalytic converters for instance, (GM?) The problem is, the offer is only good for the repair. If you've already had it done out of warranty, the offer doesn't do you much good.

Re: Here's # of Rear Diff Failures Reported

Not sure about all the #`s of diff. that have gone bad, all i know about is my `04 LE 4x4 Crew with 42000. It has been unbreakable with many miles of heavy towing and hard, fast, stop and go driving here in hilly Tenn. I must be one of the lucky ones. I have all of the ext. warranties so i will keep driving the @#$% out of it!!!!! All of these web sites are great. As for those F-150`s, i drive an `05 that is one of 10 company trucks (thank GOD) Mine has 18000 and has had 3 sets of brakes, rotors, calipers and a tranny plus upper control arms replaced. Truck rides like a buckboard wagon. The idle is so rough that it will make a coke fizz up while in cup holder. Dealer said that computer tells them there is no problem, hahahaha. whats up ford? The other 9 company junks have had as many or more problems than mine.. We also have 4 F-350`s and 1 F-450.. You guessed it!! In the shop more than on the road.. The few problems with titans are minor compaired to the fords!!
