I need your help and information guys

I have an 04 CC 4x4 with Big Tow that has 29947 miles. I have had zero problems with this truck other than the occassional tsb. Tonight I looked underneath at the rear diff and noticed that recently fluid has leaked from a small portion of the pumpkin, the pressure relief valve and at both axles with the left being alot worse than the right. I have noticed an occassional clunk in the rear but did not worry until I spotted this. I am taking to the dealer first thing in the morning. Do you think my diff is going out? I do have the new synthetic in the rear. If the rear is ok, what would cause this. I have had 3 z71 gmc trucks with zero problems or leaks at this area. Any ideas of what the dealer will say or will they blow me off. I really don't want to be stranded during the holiday season on the side of the road. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Re: I need your help and information guys

Sounds like a bad axle seal if it's leaking from the ends.

I just recently had this same problem and took it into the dealer. Mine looked like it was leaking at one time then stopped? It was darker on the left side only but dry, just a dark stain. The dealer said it was under warranty and would replace it. I was hopping they would also replace with the 05 dif cover but they didn't. They cleaned it up and put a new seal on.

Oh well, I'm keeping an eye on it.

Re: I need your help and information guys

Well guys, I just got a call from the dealer regarding my problem. He stated that both axle seals needed to be replaced. He stated that my clunking in the rear is coming from the helper springs. This seems odd due to the fact that the helper springs have been in place for about 6 months and the clunk in the rear started about two months. He states they came to this conclusion by using a set of chasis ears to isolate the sound. Do they even make such a thing? I asked him what would make the seals leak as well as the overflow valve drain fluid and he stated "sometimes they just get hot". I have not towed anything, but that should not even be a problem if the truck is made for towing. Do you guys think I am safe with the seals being replaced or should I be ready in the future to have a rear diff replaced. I love the truck and I am very satisfied so don't flame me. Your input is greatly appreciated. I am not a mechanic, but definitelly not a dumba** either when it comes to this. Do you guys think service is trying to bandaid a problem?

Yes. They tracked down one of my very early creaks with some sort of electronic system. They said they had my truck "wired up like a Christmas tree".

As far as your helpers causing it, I have no idea.

Re: I need your help and information guys

My 2004’s left seal was leaking at 30K too. My dealer has replaced these often. My right has not shown signs of failure yet at 46K. I would guess the vent spit up from overfill and heat expansion. I could be off base though.
My JT helper springs have been on for well over a year and only recently strange banging noises have emanated from the rear of the truck upon acceleration. Sounds like the rear of the truck is pulling away from the frame. Love the Titan too, but it does keep things interesting at times.
That extended warrantee does provide me with a degree of comfort.

You may want the dealer to switch the pumpkin fluid to synthetic since you’re at the 30K mark with an ‘04.

Almost all of the old black diff covers leak. If you get a chance look at the 04 covers and you will see some type of leak somewhere. Usually it is on the left side of the cover. This is just what I have noticed. Even mine did before I switched covers. Could be caused from lack of enough sealant or from extreme heat. Also make sure that your helper springs haven't moved. Sometimes they slide forward. This could cause your clunk.

Ckeck the rear spring shackles on the rear springs. Some of them have failed and come apart.
