Mileage help

I have owned my Titan since Jan 04. The ONLY thing I don't like about this truck is the mileage. The sticker said 19 hwy/14 city. I drive 60+ miles a day hwy. Cruize set at 65 98.5% of the time. I am lucky if I get 15.8 MPG. I know Est. of MPG aren't carved in granite but..............I have owned four other Frontiers and they all got with 2 MPG of the sticker. Without fail. Very disappointed in the mileage rating truth. No where near sticker.
What can I do to help this? any suggestions? I have a K&N filter that helps. Without that I would be at 14 and change. I have heard about adding asetone to the gas? Any danger? Any bennifits? All I have left is to run Flowmasters.

Thanks All

Re: Mileage help

Run your tire pressure hard, free-up the intake and exhaust, make sure your not carrying around any extra weight ( tools, golf clubs, Ashley Simpson CD's, etc.). Try tail-gating for the aerodynamic advantage and take it easy on the LOUD pedal......I get 18.5 mpg on the road @ 70mph and 15.5 mpg @ 90+ mph. Do you have 4-wheel drive?

Re: Mileage help

Most of the EPA rating testing, what little is actually completed, is done on the highway at 55 mph. Most of the sticker numbers are estimated and based on similar engines and vehicles. Every two miles per hour you go over 55, you lose about 0.5 mpg on average. This is worse for larger engines. I drive 45 miles a day, and 85 % is highway, usually around 60 - 70 MPH, and I average 16 in the summer and 15 in the winter.

Re: Mileage help

This is an interesting topic as just yesterday I was reviewing my milage record. I've been in the low 15's twice on long stretches of interstate @ 72 mph for an entire tank of fuel - 0 stops, and no on / off throttle action.

Typically I get mid 14's. In town just really sucks as I am usually seeing high 12's to low 13's. I've got a buddy with a 4x4, BT (non OR) and he's in the 17's on the highway and 15's in town. I can't say I hate him to his face, but I really do! lol

I'm wondering what's different in our trucks? What's adjustable to gain a few mpg's.. He's got an Airhog, and I've got a K&N.. surely that's not enough to make the difference.

Don't get me wrong, with the truck that I have, I didn't buy it for milage and I don't whine much about the cost at the pump. I just want to know why.

Re: Mileage help

15 isn't bad. I've yet to see 15 MPG. I don't do highway though.

Try checking your odometer against a GPS. Using my Garmin Map 60C GPS, I found that my Titan's odometer was off by 1.04% (I checked it on three different trips and each time the correction factor came up as 1.04%). This difference in mileage between my truck's odometer and my GPS made a roughly 0.5 mpg (positive) difference in my gas mileage. Try yours and see what you get.

All the fancy figuring means squat once you pull out the wallet at the pump. 15.5 MPG vs 16 doesn't mean much. You wanna play?...you gotta pay!

Re: Mileage help

Doesn't it depends on your gear ratio also? How hard you stomp on the accelerator also makes a huge difference in gas mileage.

Re: Mileage help

I drive my Titan rather conservatively on my 60+ mile round trip to work and back each day. 70% is highway. I average around 16-16.5 MPG going anywhere from 60-85 mph on the hwy. Just got back from a roadtrip, 420 miles round trip, all highway, loaded to the hilt with 3 kids, wife and lotsa luggage, and got my best 19.2 MPG. I was impressed. And even when I drive my Titan hard, I still get around 15-16 MPG.

Re: Mileage help

I average about 14.68 per tank and I rarely ever dive highway. I am in stop and go traffic through construction sites both ways. In a couple of years I will have highway the whole way !! I haven't really had a chance to take it on a road trip yet. My old Dodge ('02 4.7L) got better when I took it on a trip and added a new Air Management System, which was a cheap one. That's my next project, AFE Stage II.

I didn't say I was disappointed in my mileage, I was simply making an observation.

Re: Mileage help

I'm not going to say what I'm getting but I would love to see any of those numbers...14, 15 16, 17... but with a lift, 35's and Big Tow I just know it isn't going happen.
