I am on the verge of a purchase. Even though I am not happy with my trade in value I might be able to work something out on the warranty side.
I have been quoted $2,000 for the "Gold Plus Preferred" warranty. It is a 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty for everything related to the truck (from what I was told, belts and hoses even). First of all, is that a fair price? Second, can I do better?

They told me belts and hoses too, but it doesn't look through the handout, and it doesn't cover pretty much anything made out of rubber. I had them give me the 5/60000 mile plan for free when I bought my truck.
You shouldn't pay. Take the $1000 - $1500 you'll waste on a warranty and put it in some sort of yielding account. By the time your 5/60 factory warranty runs out, you'll have more than enough for any repairs you'll need.

I didn't buy any of them at the time of purchase and the guy was really giving it the hard sell. His last offer for the gold package was somewhere around $1100. A couple months afterwards I got a free Bronze package as part of some promotional thing from Nissan. It covers the big stuff - engine, tranny, drivetrain, etc. up to 100K (not sure on the years, for me it's always the miles first). After hanging around this board and driving my truck for a year, I decided I really don't want to own this truck with no warranty of the big stuff. My tranny makes a very seldom but really harsh 'clunk' and all the stories about the blown rear ends makes me glad to have the warranty up to 100K. If not for the warranty I would likely have sold the truck before 60K. Mine is an 05 with an 11/04 build date. It really seems that the trucks are getting more and more reliable as time passes. I think 2k is way too much to pay. All of the stuff is covered up to 3yr/36k miles anyhow so you have some time to think about it. You might call Nissan and see what your options are after you decline the ext. warr. at the time of purchase. Judging by how hard the finance guy pushes the thing, you can bet they make A LOT of money on it. Enjoy your new ride
Got my extended warranty (Gold Preferred 6yrs/100000) from the guy who advertised it here on Titantalk for $1100. Pretty good deal, especially compared to my dealer who wanted almost $1000 more when I bought my truck.

Maybe I am just alittle "gun shy". I had to dump $1,000 into my 2001 Sonoma Crew Cab for repairs in the past three weeks. This included a blower motor for heat along with some switches for the heating system. When these switches failed it cause transmission fluid to back up into the system thus requiring more switches and the like to be replaced.
I look at $1,995 as not a "bad deal" but apparently I can do better. But then again, I notice that some of the cheaper prices for the warranty coverage where on the 2004 trucks. I never have purchased an extended warranty so this is new territory for me to even look at.
Craig... If you are the type of person like me and like to hang onto your trucks past the 3/36, then to me it is worth it to get these warranty's.
With shop labor rates of around $100.00 or more per hour it makes sense.
Heres one example on one of my last fords that I had owned a 1999 F150 with a 5.4 liter which ended up being a lemon but ran great with no problems up to and a little past 36k miles. I did buy the exteneded warranty on this ford which saved my a**.
All of the trouble started, it's a long story here's the short version.
At 39k miles tranny went out ended up having to put in 2 new trannys so 3 total trannys in the truck sense new the second replacement one went out at 110k miles and was not covered under warranty. I took it to one of the best tranny shops it town and it cost me about $3000.00 repair it. I dump that truck right after that.
Also that old truck had alot of motor problems as well. everything ran great on the factory engine untill it hit about 42k miles when the engine started to knock real bad, also it had piston slap real bad so dealer replace with new engine, on that new engine they installed two of the spark plugs just blew right out of the heads and dented the hood of my truck.
That Engine was damage do to metal shavings and it was also replace with another new one, That one the heads would never seal on the block because the deck of the block was warped so it too was replace with yet another new one. so 3 replacement engines in that one truck alone!
Rear diff also rebuilt 3 times in the first 100k miles do to bad per-load and crush whasher problems, the crush whasher would just keep losening up and throw off the pinion gear and cause noise with the ring gear.
Pluss a hole slew of other stuff to long to mention here. but I will say that this was not the only ford truck I had major problems with which was the main reason for me switching brands and buying a Titan.
I have been able to A PLANE all of my fords so I would get a good deal on them but with all of the trouble I've had with them over the years I NEVER felt that I was EVER getting my moneys worth buying any of them!
I figure that the one truck alone must have been over 30 or 40 grand in warranty work done on it alone, so when you all here about how much trouble Ford or Chev is in money wise it dose not help them when there trucks are always breaking down.
There was also tons of F150's in for warranty work when my truck was in there.
I"ve never owned a Ford that did not need warranty work done to it!
Sorry for the long story I really tried to shorten it up a lot.
Thanks for taking the time to hear me out!
Deep.

I don't think you can compare engine and related componants on a Ford to a Nissan but.....my opinion is just that...opinion. If you're the type that needs some insurance to sleep at night, then the warranty may be good buy.
I agree with you on that, I'm not tryng to compare them (ford to nissan).
But that is why I bought a Nissan this time. I was hoping to not have all of those kinds of problems with the Titan. And my old 04 Titan was a lemon which also had something to do with me buying the warranty.
like you said it's a peace of mind thing and also if you do want to sell it down the road it's easier to do when you have a extended warranty on the truck.
But everybodys views maybe different on this.

Past vehicle experience is probably ones strongest motive...as you said, having a lemon will do it. I've been lucky but...I've also never owned a vehicle past its' factory warranty.
