Went out in the desert to go shooting today and there were some pretty deep mud puddles on the road. On the way out I splashed through them just fine, but on the way back I hit this one which was 20" deep (approx) and my truck sputters and is barely running. First thing I think of is Austin's mired Titan, so I pull the airbox open and its completely full of water. I have muddy water in my intake tract and the filter is soaked. I'm soo pissed. I wasn't even mud bogging or anything. So I had to limp it to an auto parts store to get a new filter. I'm going to tear the intake apart tomorrow to clean it out. I can't believe what a sh!tty design this intake is..

Wow, a 20" deep mudpuddle did that? Maybe cutting out a hole with a 2" holesaw in the bottom of the box will allow the liquid to drain faster than it enters the box, preventing it from getting sucked into the throttlebody.......and by the way, you have soft and tender looking hands.

It is the tirewell. My idea was to have the box come from in front and be sealed to the drivewell. Also, I wanted to have a drain, similar to the drain plugs you find in a floorpan, so water will drain out, but take a long time to go in.
Here is the airbox (I did wipe it out yesterday when I put the new filter in). But as you can see by the rest of the engine compartment, nothing really got muddy except THE PARTS THAT SHOULDN"T HAVE!
My day is getting worse. Looks like there is a lot of dried mud in the intake. My throttle body looked like someone had lightly sprayed some muddy water on it, but the intake manifold looks worse:
WTF should I do? Take the manifold off myself and clean it or go to the dealer and ***** since one would *think* that a 4x4 truck should be able to cross deep mud puddles.....
Clean it up best you can, put it back together and take a long, hard drive......a tank or two, and maybe, just maybe it'll all be O.K.....when in doubt-FLOG it out, as I like to say.

This is a good reason to install a CIA like the Air Charger from K&N......No chance of it sucking water unless you submerge it. This design has obvious issues. This is one of the reason I went with the K&N over the Volant.
Clean it out yourself if at all possible. If your dealer is an a-hole, he'll void your engine warranty. Those fender liners are some cheesy-*** stuff. I have the XE which has a little better coverage than SE/LE, but it still feels like I could break it easily by hand.
Well I tore the intake manifold completely off, and soaked it in a tub of water and detergent. I hosed it out real good. I cleaned the injectors off and tried to wipe out the ports on the head. I could see that 1/2 the valves had litttle mud spatters on them. I was suprised at how easy it was to take the whole intake off. I did the best I could to clean the ports out and clean the valves off, but I couldn't get it all. It seems to be running fine now. Lets just hope it stays that way. I have more pics, but I'm too lazy right now.
