What weight Royal Purple synthetic for diff

I am going to go get some Royal Purple tonight for my rear diff, what weight does Nissan recomend using and how many quarts will the diff take?

Also how difficult is it to change the fluid, and is there a certain torque that the drain plug needs to be tightened to?

2005, SE, CC, BT, 4X4

Thanks for the help.

new man,

I use Royal Purple 75/90 on the rear. I'm Hearing we should switch to 80/140???? You'll need a little over 2 guarts. So buy 3.

Changing the fluid, is very easy.
1. Drive it to warm up the fluid
2. Remove upper fill plug with ratchet drive
Why fill plug before drain plug? To make sure you can fill it up before you
drain it.
3. Remove drain plug (Remove all shavings from plug)
4. Reinstall drain plug, I put a little Permetex silicon on the thread and tighten
it until previous location. (Torque ?????????)
5. Add fluid, fill until just below the fill plug
6. Reinstall fill plug, I put a little Permetex silicon on the thread and tighten
it until previous location. (Torque ?????????)

Hope this helps, good luck.

Re: What weight Royal Purple synthetic for diff

I would go with the 75-140 full synthetic if I were you. I had M1 75-90 in for about 5k and it held up great, but with all the rear diff. probs if I were to have one go (knock on wood) I dont want nissan to have anything to hang there hat on like saying that I used the wrong gear lube or anything like that.
Its a few dollars more, but if you are going to do it thats what I would use.

75/140 is what Nissan now recommends.

Talking Re: What weight Royal Purple synthetic for diff

I switched to the 75-140 Royal Purple. In the city I usually got 14.5 MPG. After the switch I get 12.5 to 13.5 MPG. I plan on going back to 80-90 to see if thats the reason for the drop. If everyone thinks the oil is not the issue any suggestions on to why the loss in mpg. The first 12,500 miles were on 80-90. The last 2,500 miles the RP 75-140 is the only major change.

Do you have any ratchet's? It's either 3/8'' or 1/2''. Can't remember off the top of my watermelon.

Re: What weight Royal Purple synthetic for diff

Thanks for all the help. I changed it last night and it went fine (other than 30mph winds...a little messy) I did not use a torque wrench, just hand tightned, hope that will be OK? The oil that came out (6,500 miles) looked like metalflake paint, even when I took the fill plug out and dipped my finger in it it was all metal shavings. No big chunks though so thats good. I guess I will run the Royal Purple in it for about 2,00 miles then drain again to get all the leftover crap out, then fill it back up and be good to go for a long while.

I also did not know I could just use the front of the wratchet (no sockets or driver extensions) to get the plugs out, I was running around looking for a 3/8" driver, until someone told me you can just use the front square of the wratchet.
