Question G Tech question??

Ok I am thinking about a Gtech( I think that is what you call them.) Since I saw buzzes video of the G teched Titan. I didnt know it was something that just stuck to the front window, I thought It was much larger than that. Im pretty dumbed on this subject so I am looking for someone to tell me where I can get one and how much? Also How easy are they to hook up? Does it just tell you how fast in the 1/4 mile and speed or other good info about what is going on in the engine? Is there other brands that might be better or worse? Can it easily be transfered to another vehicle? I did a search but the reading is extensive to find out all the info. Thanks!!

Re: G Tech question??

I've been thinking about one too. I've seen some on Ebay for about $50 cheaper than MRSP. There is two version the SS and teh RR. I think I'm going for the SS since I'm not into downloading my info to a PC ect.... I just want one the the truck to play with.

Re: G Tech question??

The cheap ones on Ebay are OK but not
the greatest. I did buy my Pro SS on
Ebay but it cost me $200. That included
shipping a well. The Pro RR is about $300
and you can connect to your PC and chart,
graph data. Kind of cool but not needed.
Mine gives you 60ft, 330ft, 1/8 mile, 1000ft
and 1/4 mile times. Also HP and TRQ all though
I have never set it up for that. Have to have
weight (which I do) of your vehicle and set up
redline and tach in order to do it. TT member
Armada has lots of info on this function. In
order for the Gtech to be accurate you have
to have a good motionless mount to your
windshield. You have to pick the most level
and smooth road you can find. Safety must
be taken into consideration. Then do runs
in both directions and average the results.
They are a lot of fun and quite sensitive.
You can see improvements even with the
lesser gain producing mods. You also have to
try and duplicate conditions for accurate testing.
Near the same weather. Same amount of fuel
in the tank. Same tire pressure. Etc: Hope this
helps.

Re: G Tech question??

Oh yes. You get MPH and G force measurements.
My best G force off the line (that I can remember)
was a .78

Re: G Tech question??

I recommend the RR. While the SS is excellent, there is considerable value in the extra $100 in being able to download the data.

You don't have to be computer savvy at all and the data, particularly comparisons between runs can tell you a lot about the effect of mods and the effect of changes in weather conditions.

You can not only make comparisons between multiple runs, but you can generate and save charts as jpg files.

I'm attaching a few representative ones, just to illustrate.

It's a small price to pay for a lot of additional ability to permanently retain data and make comparisons.

The hp v. torque (actually hp and torque v. rpm) and hp v. time charts were made on back to back runs in opposite directions on the same road four minutes apart.

BTW, the unit is easy to move from vehicle to vehicle and can be separately calibrated for each vehicle and will hold those differences in memory.

Re: G Tech question??

I have one of the very old ones and it works great. But 1/4 mile times are hard get as you may endup going well over a hundred in some cars. The 0-60 function is most used for me. THe very best part about the g-tech is when some superduty guy tells you how bad-*** his smoker is and you go "oh yeah, lets see" and just slap the g-tech on his widshield and the truth will be known. My g-tech has humbled many braggers. i carry it with me at all times.

The older units were OK but many have complained
about their accuracy and consistency. The
technology has improved a great deal. If you leave
it in your vehicle I would be careful of leaving it in
the sun or in the hot interior of your vehicle.

Oh yes!! The ol'e HONEY DO LIST!! And us men
thought slavery ended! LOL!!

The Gtech plugs into your cigarette lighter or
your 12V power port. Same thing. One is hot
all the time. One is hot with the ignition on
only. At least that is how it is on my Dodge.
How these things know how far you have
traveled, how fast your going and the time it
has taken is beyond me. I know that they
use accelometers and that the technology is
used in rockets and aircraft but it is amazing
how it knows the distance you have traveled.
Maybe Armada can shed some more light on
how it functions.

Accelerometers have been used in aircraft balancing equipment for decades. They measure movement in IPS(inches per second) this along with time can give you lots of different data. They measure the amount of force applied to a given weight for a given amount of time.

Re: G Tech question??

Hopefully they will switch to velometers instead of accelerometers. Velometers measure in 3 axis instead of accelerometers that only measure in one axis. With velometers we could get skid pad and other readings.

Thanks for the info. You know more about it
than I do. I do know my Gtech is quite
accurate though. It is on of the best auto
related devices I think I have ever bought.
My Superchips programmer is probably second.
