Proper way to transport an engine?...

Hey guys my friend just bought a Chevy 305ci for a project and needs me to transport it to his house (in MD) from PA. I'm wondering if there's any specific way I should strap it down so it doesn't roll around everywhere. I know a lot of people have had their bed dented from heavy objects , are there any precautions I can take against this?

Thanks,
-Cyrus

Build a nice solid wood cradle for it. Strap the engine to the cradle.

Then tie the cradle down to the truck. It will keep the engine from rolling around. Think sudden stop or minor accident with a engine flying through your back window. You might even be able to pick up a cradle from a dealership for free.

used tire with the oil pan in the opening. Then use your tie downs to strap it down. No racing through the corners like a GT.

No offense, but all that for a 305. They are a dime a dozen.

Re: Proper way to transport an engine?...

It was the closest one he could find in his price range... I'm hopeing it's not too much trouble. I think I'm going to go with the tire and oil pan idea, thanks guys!

Keep those suggestions comin!

Re: Proper way to transport an engine?...

The tire thing is good.

You could put the tire in the middle of the bed and strap it at each corner to put tension on each side. That should help to hold it....

Re: Proper way to transport an engine?...

Put it at the front of the bed so it wont shift under braking

Re: Proper way to transport an engine?...

My way would be to have the engine shipped to his house. The reason I say this is anything happens to your truck, the repair would be more expensive than shipping charges and it puts a strain on your friendship.

Re: Proper way to transport an engine?...

I transported an engine for a buddy a while ago and we used an old wood pallet we picked up for free from a hardware store. Then we built a box around it using the pallet as the base. This seemed to work good, but you probably don't need to build a box, just something for the engine to rest on. Of course this was an old I-4, so we laid it on it's side. A V8 will probably require you to shim up the sides so it's not resting on the pan.

Re: Proper way to transport an engine?...

Be careful when the fork lift puts the engine down and then tries to push the engine up the bed!

It would be better if they can put it directly where it needs to be on or just in front of the rear axle in the truck bed.

As stated above, tie it down so that it does not slide in any direction and is not prone to falling over.
