Fluttering noise under acceleration? Update!!

Hi all,
2011 SV CC with 125,000 KM on the clock. No ticking sounds from the motor while cold, or while parked while revving the motor. I notice a " fluttering " noise when I stomp on the gas that keeps pace with the engine revs. Is this normal?

Is the fan rubbing on the shroud?

Re: Fluttering noise under acceleration?

It's either exhaust manifolds or a hole in the muffler.

Times 2. As soon as spring has sprung my plan is to see if the b-pipe has somehow worked loose from the manifold. I've found a similar diagnosis although not a Titan online. I'll report back if I found anything.

Re: Fluttering noise under acceleration?

Thanks for the replies guys. The funny thing is that the noise only occurs when I am in motion under acceleration. When I am parked ( even under a cold start) there is no ticking noise whatsoever, even if I depress the gas pedal. Also, no codes?

Re: Fluttering noise under acceleration?

Ticking only in motion is likely to be a tire or brake issue. Check all your tires for screws and rocks, and check your brakes for any sticking calipers or failing e-brake shoes.

Re: Fluttering noise under acceleration?

I have the same issue. Only under acceleration, especially when towing. I'm pretty sure it's an exhaust leak somewhere. Likely cracked manifolds.

Re: Fluttering noise under acceleration?

Check the tailpipe muffler flange both sides, known issue to have rust rot. i'd check that ASAP! If it rots away you can melt the rear wire harness in a hurry. Especially while towing.

I second this. If it was an exhaust leak or manifold issue you'd hear it all the time. If it's only when moving then it's something that's moving only when moving.

Have you had this since day 1 or started up recently or after you changed something out?

Re: Fluttering noise under acceleration?

I had a bad U-Joint that sounded like something other than the U-joint. Only made the noise under load and crawling under the truck I couldn't see or feel any indication that the U-joint was bad. I know you say it changes with engine revs, but double check that its engine revs and not speed. Just a thought.... I have many, but most are weird.......

Actually, I had that flange cut away awhile ago, and a solid piece of pipe welded in.

Re: Fluttering noise under acceleration?

I read once on the forum about the 5.6 having a "CIS" ( card in spokes) sound under hard acceleration. Could that be what I'm hearing? I have a buddy with an Armada that has cracked manifolds, and the ticking from his motor is especially loud, especially under initial startup. Mine sounds nothing like his....

It's possible, just depends on how faint what you're hearing is. If you're full stock exhaust I would think you'd hear more noise from the engine bay than the tail pipe though.

Re: Fluttering noise under acceleration?

I can vouch for what they/we are hearing. It's 100% coming from the engine bay, only during acceleration, nothing to do with speed, and only when in gear. The pitch changes with your foot, not the speed. At idle, or in park and revving it sounds 100% normal. As an aside I'm running a Magnaflow cat back single outlet. I've tapes up the joints and they are all solid and not the issue. Once I can get under her when it warms and dries up I want to see if there is something loose. It does sometimes go way and the truck sounds normal which is what leads me to believe something up front is loose.
