HELP! Grinding noise on startup!

Hey guys went out and drove the truck today, got a bite to eat and go to start it and get a pretty loud grinding noise. Sounds like when you have the car running already and turn the key by accident. Doing it every time I start it up now. Truck drives fine, no abnormal noises once it's running. No CEL or anything. I'm going straight to the dealer tomorrow morning any idea what it could be? TIA.

Re: HELP! Grinding noise on startup!

It's the bendix in the starter and/or a chewed up flywheel.

Re: HELP! Grinding noise on startup!

Stopped by Nissan today to let them listen to it, they confirmed it was probably the starter and set up an appointment on Thursday to check it out.

My service department was great as always

Re: HELP! Grinding noise on startup!

good luck, and yup sounds like the engagement for the starter is getting stuck in the out position

Re: HELP! Grinding noise on startup!

Yep, time for a new starter. I wouldn't mess with the dealer unless your still under warranty.
