Question Tough Decision

Hi everyone,

I am turning to the community here, because I am currently in the market for a new vehicle. The first one I ever owned was a truck and since then I have only driven cars. Well, this time around, I am interested in going back to a truck but the question is...Which truck?

I have recently test driven both the 2006 Titan Crew Cab LE and the 2006 Tundra Limited. Both seemed to be great trucks and both seemed to have their differences. Personally, I liked the Titan more because is just seems like a much larger truck on the inside and it is certainly more up to date on the interior. As much as I liked the 06 Tundra, it's dated as hell on the inside which is something I am having difficulty overlooking.

Anyways, I have read where several people doubt the quality of the Titan in regards to engine problems, brake problems, rattles, etc. When I test drove one, I didn't see any of these issues, but of course, it was brand new and not "broken in" like the Titans that many of the members here have. I also recently read a consumer reports article that rated the Titan as having a poor quality rating.

So, what I am asking for is some advice. What do the owners here have to say about their Titans since consumer reports and other articles seem not to like the Titan's reliability? To be honest, I would really prefer to purchase a Titan, but I am hesitant at this point. So, come on guys and gals...Help me out here!

Prod

Re: Tough Decision

What are the dates on the reports you are reading? Titan had a couple issues in 2004 but they have since been fixed.

That I am not sure of. It was out of a handful of magazines that a buddy of mine has that were all about cars and such.

Since you mentioned that though, it brings up a good point. What, if any, issues is anyone experiencing with 06 Titans?

Re: Tough Decision

I am getting my new Titan LE Crew Cab at the end of the week. I just got rid of my 05 Double Cab Tundra. The Tundra is a GREAT truck. Very reliable, and the 4.7 engine is probably the most reliable engine I have ever had in a truck. My problem was that it is a heavy double cab, and it is a little underpowered when towing. I simply needed more power.
I have always liked the Titan. Yes, it had a few (major) initial problems, but they appear to be worked out now for the 06's. Though some folks (not on this forum) think the Titan interior is nasty, I love it, and it is actually more comfortable to me than the Tundra. The Tundra interior looks like my grandpas Avalon (I had the limited) and while it looked nice, it is kind of dated. The Titan is a truck and looks like it. The tiedowns are great, the storage bay on the side of the bed is something I will really be using, and the fact that the rear seats flip UP rather than tumble forward is a huge deal to me. I wish the Titan had a 74" bed like the Tundra...that is kind of a bummer 'cause I need the bed space, but I need the interior space, too.
You cannot go wrong if you get the Tundra...I really liked mine, and MAYBE it would be a more reliable rig long term, but that's not an absolute.
I'd go with the Titan if you want/need the power, and want a meaner looking ride. The Tundra has a pretty refined ride, but you are looking at the last year of the body style, so it will be the "old" version pretty quick.

Good luck.

Re: Tough Decision

I personally haven't heard too much about engine problems. The two big knocks on the Titan early on where the brakes and rear diff. Both of these problems seem to be worked out by 06. You can read posts from guys on here who have 04 models without a single issue, so it all depends really. Keep in mind that the reliability record for the Titan is limited, since it's only been in production for two years. Also, consumer reports sometimes skews the curve if a few people in the focus group have had issues with the Titan; automatically it will get a bad rap. You need to read the vast majority of feedback on this site. There are numerous members with 04 and 05 model year Titans who drive them tough and have little or no issue what so ever. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference. I went for the Titan because it had the most bang for the buck and I felt comfortable with the reliability because of my past experience with Nissans, despite what consumer reports might say. Do whatever is going to make you more comfortable. I (and many others here) will tell you that you won't be disappointed with the Titan.

Check out this thread....
If you could *fix* one thing on your Titan, what would it be?

All good points, and thanks for taking the time to post it. So tough to make the call.

Re: Tough Decision

The only problem i had with my 2005 is the brakes which was fixed free of charge, other than that, this is the best 1/2 ton truck i've owned. Now i'm just waiting for the diesel Titan.

I'm guessing you had brake problems like most others here had with some of the earlier Titans? Was the underlying issue pads that were too small or something?

It was the pads.

Re: Tough Decision

As for Interior we loved the design or atleast I do, specially with the floor shifter... what most of us complaint is the cheap plastic they used, it gets scratch very easy... but other than that go for it...best truck in the market looks, power, & price...
