I heard that if cars/trucks have a computer on it and u try to jump start someone u could damage you vehicle or pass on a diaognostic problem fromn one car to another. Kinda like sharing a virus. Just wondering if ever I had to jump start someone.
I've jump started a few vehicles with my Titan including the "Anxiety Attack" Scare-maro and nothing any different occured....maybe Myth Busters should look into it.

No, your not going to pass on any "viruses" from one vehicle to the other. It is possible to short out the computer if you don't do it right. At least I've heard of it happening, never known it to. Just do the jump right, there are detailed instructions in your manual. If someone wants me to jump them, I handle the cables.

It's not like Herpes! If done wrong, I've heard of damaging the battery itself but....I've been doing it for years (jumpstarting that is) and never had a problem or know anyone else who has.

Many, many years ago when I was a teenager, an old lady and her 20 something year old grandson was parked next to me at a store with a dead battery....as I walked up, they hit me up for some cables...which I had of course....and a jump.....I was hooking up the cables on my car and that moron adult grandson of hers was hooking up the cables to their car.....my battery EXPLODED in my face with a thunderous ka-bloom....luckly nothing hit me but it did minor damage to my presteen '56 Chevy...luckily, my dad ran a bodyshop.....I discovered that that bumbling idiot crossed the cables.....I have never ever ever allowed anybody to hook up cables in my presence ever again...not even my dad.

1. connect the Pos. jumper cables to both batteries Pos. posts.
2. connect the Neg. jumper cable to the dead battery Neg. post.
3. connect the the other Neg. jumper cable to a good ground on your engine ( such as an alternator bracket) or your chasis frame. NOT on your battery. Then remove the jumper cables in reverse order.
It is best do it yourself. Don't let anyone help you connect the jumper cables.

true but you got it backwards. Connect the positives, then the neg on your neg post, then chssis ground on the dead car at least 12-16 inches away from battery. And jump starting should ONLY be done in an extreme emergency because of the things that can happen to the "good" battery when jumping

You are both right. The important thing is that you make the last connection to the engine block or whatever, AWAY from the battery. This is where a spark may occur when the circuit is completed. This reduces the chances of igniting any hydrogen gas from the battery. You can connect both black cables to a ground point if you like.

and why is a spark bad??? because batteries (when sulfated, [undercharged]) emit hydrogen and hydrogen is highly flammable, dont want any sparks flying around that stuff. Anyone ever seen a battery explode? not fun

They sell cables now with fuses built in...if you got things crossed etc A) the light on the cables won't glow and B, if you're still dumb enough to try you just blow the fuse...cool stuff.

Get a battery recharger to avoid the chance of blowing your battery altogether. One set of cables that you connect to the dead battery. One minute later-they're ready to rumble!
