Timing advance question??????

My truck is in the shop today should I ask if they can do the 2 deg. timing advance. And most important how does it affect towing ability? Will it cause it to knock? I do alot of towing so if it messes the towing ability up I dont want to do it. What do you guys think???

Re: Timing advance question??????

Hey Helinut, I got mine done for free today at the dealership. The tech was real nice. I do notice a beter lower end torque and better accelleration. So another words, it realy takes off.

Re: Timing advance question??????

NO downsides to this mod. You should get better throttle response and better mileage. UpRev (the people who sell the Cipher software) also found a 5-6 HP increase on the dyno. So, it may actually help your towing, but definitely will not hurt it. Some dealerships won't do it, so good luck.

Re: Timing advance question??????

I gotta take my Truck into the shop tomorrow and I asked the service dept about getting the timing advance when I made the appointment today. He said that the 06 can't be adjusted....and even if it could be it would adjust itself back being that it's all computer controlled...

Should I talk to the mechanic? or what?

Re: Timing advance question??????

Heli,

I have the big tow as well and noticed a Huge Difference with the get up and go. SM said no effect on towing.

I agree with Dr. C, have noticed a slight MPG improvement.

what would advancing your timing have to do with Smog Laws in California ? ( just curious )

and I don't think the person who did really gives a sh!t. He just hooked up the scanner and adjusted the timing. If I don't like it and want it back to normal I just have to tell him and he will do it.

Re: Timing advance question??????

I don't know enough about it but......autmotive common sense would suggest that any manual advance would maybe benefit RIGHT after the adjustment was made....until the ECU automatically adjusted it back to where it belongs. Is this not the case?...And if not....why?

My service manager buddy told me that would eventualy happen. He said at first you would notice it untill the ECU goes back to were is belongs. I went ahead and tried this to see. It's only been a week and still is good. I am not sure the time frame that it would "tard" ( the word he used ) back to normal.
