Re: Donahoe rear 4x4 shocks ordered

well guys... i got them installed and me and a couple of buddies went for a drive. the truck handles like a dream. i couldn't resist and we took it offroading. the truck handled the uneven bumpy dirt road leading to the area where we got stuck easy and with cadillac-like comfort. this was my 1st time really going offroading so i got nervous when we got STUCK! i was so nervous that i forgot to lock my rear differential. it took longer than it should have to get it out but i'm glad we made it out without having to get anyone to pull us out. this was more like clay than mud and it was difficult for the stock offroad tires to bite into it.

i wasn't able to make it all the way across because it was much deeper than we thought. we had to back out and it was shooting water up but none got in the intake system.

the 2 inch lift did some good and prevented us from getting caught on the front bumper.

the suspension is tight and very comfortable instead of the Rancho loose and bumpy. i'm a very happy man.

this is where we got stuck... it was very deep (i'm a beginner, 1st truck)

this is the truck after getting unstuck. the hood is open to check the air filter.

removing the air filter

steep drop-off

water was 7 inches deep at the entry point

19 inches deep from level ground

the only casualty

Nice Pics. Those shocks look great and I am glad to hear they perform so well.
I am planning a trip to visit PRG and get the performance lift with the DR rears as well.
I mean it Greg I am really going to finally do it! Thanks for the patience

So just the rear shocks make that much of a difference?

it was the combination of front shocks and rear shocks. i had my front shocks on for less than 24 hours (30 miles) before i put my rears on when they came in. i went searching for empty parking lots of speedbumps to fly over but then i ran across a construction site where they were just leveling dirt. the entrance was very bumpy and uneven from the the rain and work vehicles entering there. i went flying through there at 40mph with NO problems. it was very smooth.

when i reached the end of the road, i found a way to get behind all the huge dirt mounds and that's where we found the area where i got stuck.

all in all, the shocks helped greatly during the "prerunning" offroad area. i only bottomed out once because i was bouncing while climbing a specific hill; i have no doubt that the DR shocks (front and rear) saved me from having a bigger dent on my muffler.

the number on there is 6191 8-7510. keep in mind, the shocks are different for 4x2 and for 4x4 titans. give Greg at www.prgproducts.com a call for the price.

i paid $198 shipped for the pair. i think DR Jon said the shocks were retail $99 a piece. i saved on shipping so i feel like i got a little bit of a discount.

Still sounds good if they work. What would be a guesstimate of what it would cost in labor for installing coilovers in the front and the shocks for the rear.

if you have jackstands tall enough for the truck, socket and wrench sets, you can do it yourself. the fronts are just 3 bolts on top and 1 on the bottom. it's nice to have a friend help you also. the trick on the front coilovers is to have all 3 bolts threaded only a few threads before you tighten them all up. it helps to have your friend look down onto the upper shock mount from above and let you know which way to turn the shock to line up the holes. it just takes a little bit of elbow grease. the 1st side of the coilovers took a longer than usual but we were able to get the 2nd side in about 20 minutes. keep in mind, we were using my Nissan spare tire jack and hand cranking it.

the rears are even easier. you will need a socket extension and a deep-socket 19mm or a 19mm wrench. soak it in WD40 ahead of time to loosen the bolts.

however, if you didn't want to do the labor, i would guestimate that they would charge you 1-2 hours of labor. with a lift and all the tools that a shop has, they should be able to do it in an hour for front and rear. my uncle is a mechanic so i'm not really familiar with paying any auto repair charges but i suspect hey charge $60-90 per hour here in the midwest.

DR makes there own stuff. They would never use somebody elses shock and just slap their name on it.
