Blacked Out Headlight Mod Questions???

I performed the blacked out headlight mod 2 weeks ago and love the new look. However, we got a good rain yesterday, and there is quite a bit of moisture inside the light??? When I reassembled the lights they went back together very tight, I even applied a bead of silicone caulk around the outside edge.

I did this same mod to my previous truck, '03 Frontier, and had no problems. I did notice that the Frontier's headlights were vented, and the Titan's were not, at least that I could tell. In the Titan Headlight TSB, (the one about moisture in the headlights) it says that the headlights are vented for air to expand and contract during weather changes. Is it possible that I sealed the headlight too well???

Re: Blacked Out Headlight Mod Questions???

I've had mine done for a couple months now and have not had an issue at all. When I reassembled mine I put a fresh bead of black RTV sealant in the groove before I put them back together. I'm thinking that maybe by you applying the sealant afterwards that it didn't seal as well as it should have. That's the only thing I can think of???

I totally agree with QWIK......

Best bet would be to take them back off, re-split them, and reseal them with the Black RTV Sealant.

Re: Blacked Out Headlight Mod Questions???

I have no opinion on the cause, but I will tell you that in 1989 I bought an F-150 that had those big frog eye lookin' headlights....after about a year, I developed alot of moisture inside one of them so I took it to the dealership and showed the service writer....he pulled out a 1/4 inch drill, laid down on his back and drilled a small hole in the bottoms of both headlight assemblys....straight up from behind the bumper.....I never ever had any more moisture issues again....I sold the truck in 1997 with 165k miles.....I suppose what he did was open up a vent hole to allow any condesation or moisture to evaporate out.

Re: Blacked Out Headlight Mod Questions???

I also experienced this problem after the mod. I drilled 4 small holes in the bottom of each assembly and haven't had the problem since...

Re: Blacked Out Headlight Mod Questions???

Yep now the moisture has an escape route to evaporate out. I think they make them airtight to keep the connector and light assembly corroding and to prevent premature bulb failure. I'd wonder about in the winter but it sounds like you got it fixed you may have to replace the bulbs more often maybe try some dielectric contact grease in the socket to prevent any corrosion or oxidation from the moisture.
